GVSU Queer Connections

The LGBT FSA is seeking LGBTQIA+ faculty, staff, and graduate students to participate in Queer Connections, GVSU's LGBT mentorship program. Queer Connections is open to all members of the university community but is specifically designed to match LGBTQIA+ undergraduate students with OUT faculty, staff, or graduate students. Working with the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center, mentors will be matched with LGBTQIA-identified students. Mentoring pairs will meet regularly over a six-month period during which time they will build connections, explore resources, and work toward collaboratively-constructed goals. More information about the program can be found on the Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center Queer Connections page.

Apply to be a mentor!

Mentor FAQ

How and when do I get matched?

All new mentors have an orientation/screening meeting with one or more of the program coordinators when the program kicks off in September/October.  This is also when we do matching.  If you get matched, you'll get an email notification sometime in that timeframe with contact info for your mentee.

The program coordinators match folks on a variety of factors-shared identities, the mentees stated preferences, the needs they express, etc.

When does the program run?

Roughly from October/November to April of the next calendar year.

What's the time commitment?

Bare minimum, six meetings over a six month period, and the time required to fill out the three check-in forms.  But we encourage you to spend more time than that interacting and getting to know each other.

I have other questions!

Feel free to contact program coordinator Kendra Ollis (she/her) at [email protected] or reach out directly to the FSA at [email protected]
