Preparing Future Students for Success

The GVSU 8th Grade Pathways program was established to prepare students early for the academic and personal challenges of high school, provide career exploration opportunities, support their development, promote equity and access, and strengthen community ties.

We address this challenge, and the challenge of overall student success by providing students with opportunities to gain awareness and knowledge about higher education. When we break down the barriers in front of students and connect them to supportive people early on, they gain the tools to become successful leaders on the Grand Valley State University campus.

More than 1,000 students participate in the Pathway program!

The Pathway Program

Academic, Financial, and Career Support

The 8th Grade Pathways to GVSU program is an institutional initiative that provides students as early as the 8th grade with foundational support to be successful for entrance to Grand Valley State University. The program achieves this through the deployment of academic and social enrichment activities, including information on the factors that bolster college-going readiness.

Students will have the opportunity to be fully immersed in the Pathways to GVSU program for a total of four years. Each year, students will be provided opportunities to learn about the different majors and academic programs at Grand Valley, and to engage in campus life activities, career workshops, mentorship, and more.

Upon completion of the program, participants will receive an official acceptance letter to GVSU which will be honored when the student meets all GVSU admission requirements.

Grand Valley State University's Allendale campus.

Completion of the Pathways to GVSU program requires participation in campus programming and enrichment activities:

Each student will receive one-on-one mentorship throughout the entire academic year! This support will assist them in meeting the necessary academic requirements to graduate high school and smoothly transition into college. Additionally, they will become familiar with Grand Valley’s academic programs, setting a strong foundation for their future success.

If you're starting to think about college, we'll help you understand how to prepare and save for college expenses. We'll teach you about the free Federal Application For Student Aid (FAFSA), federal and state financial aid programs, and scholarship resources.

Are you ready to unlock the incredible potential of your hobbies, strengths, and interests and turn them into a future career? The GVSU Career Center will share what it takes to bridge the gap between what you love and what you become, opening doors to a future that reflects your true self. Whether you're just beginning to think about your career or discovering what you are passionate about, we'll help you understand the value of digging deeper to find your path.
