This program is located in Maastricht, a vibrant university town in southern Netherlands near the borders of Belgium and Germany. Students will take two 3 credit courses that fulfill teacher certification requirements for English education students (ENG 365 and ENG 400) and participate in a field placement in a Dutch or international elementary or secondary school. The program includes a walking and biking orientation to Maastricht and the environs. In addition to other local excursions, there will be a visit to Amsterdam and the Anne Frank House. Students will be encouraged to travel on their own to nearby destinations such as Amsterdam, Paris, Bruges, and Antwerp on several free weekends.
Credits
Program participants will receive a total of 6 credits:
Secondary English Ed students:
ENG 365*: Teaching ESL (3 credits)
ENG 400: Critical Issues in Literacy (3 credits)
Elementary Ed (PCKET and CSAT) Students:
ENG 355: Teaching ELs, PK-6 (3 credits)
ENG 401: Language, Literacies, and Culture (3 credits)
*Students who have already taken ENG 365 may substitute ENG 469.
Fulfils (1) General Education Issues course requirement. Reflection required.
Honors Students can use this experience to fulfill their HNR 300, HNR 401, or HNR 499 requirement
Academics Information:
Open to: Secondary English Ed majors, Elementary Ed majors (PCKET & CSAT), and ESL Minors.
Deadline
Completed applications will be reviewed as they are received, and students will be admitted on a rolling basis.
Eligibility
Elementary education students must have completed ENG 261 and ENG 308 with 307 and 309 highly recommended.
Secondary English education students must have completed ENG 261 with 310 and 311 highly recommended. CSAT must have completed PSY 301 and ENG 308 with ENG 302 highly recommended. 3.0 GPA required. Visit the website for details. The program size is limited to 16 participants. GVSU is happy to extend this opportunity to non-GVSU students.
Financial Aid and Grants
Students can use financial aid, scholarships, grants, personal funds and alternative loans to fund study abroad. Scholarship options include but are not limited to the Faculty-Led Program Grant ($1,500). Faculty-Led program grants are need-based and limited. For more information on funding, visit Study Abroad.
Non-GVSU Students: Non-GVSU Students admitted for study abroad are not eligible for Financial Aid from GVSU. Check with your home schools' study abroad and financial aid office for details on applying financial aid from your home school toward study abroad program costs.

Certificate of International Teaching Experience
Students can earn a “Certificate of International Teaching Experience” when you participate in any of the approved study abroad programs that have a school field experience in the destination country. In addition to the study abroad experience, you would enroll in PCK/EDI 315 for 1-3 credits to earn the certificate. Your study abroad director can help advise you about the appropriate process for you.
