Erica R. Hamilton
Dr. Erica R. Hamilton has been a member of the GVSU community since August 2014. Prior to joining The Graduate School, Dr. Hamilton most recently served as an Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. Additionally, Dr. Hamilton is an Associate Professor of Literacy Studies in the College of Education and Community Innovation.
Dr. Hamilton earned a B.A. in English from Michigan State University and started her career as a public school teacher, a role she held for eleven years. She also holds an M.A. in Curriculum and Teaching and a Ph.D. in Curriculum, Teaching, and Educational Policy, both from Michigan State University.
A respected scholar and award-winning educator, Dr. Hamilton recently co-authored a book on adolescent literacy published by Teachers College Press. Her research interests span teacher education, place-based education, educational technology, and the experiences of women in academia. Her work has been featured in leading peer-reviewed journals, including Teaching and Teacher Education, The Journal of Adult and Adolescent Literacy, The Journal of Museum Education, College Teaching, School University Partnerships, and Frontiers in Education.
Beyond her administrative and academic roles, Dr. Hamilton is actively engaged with the community as a volunteer and as a member of the Grand Rapids Public Schools’ Museum School Advisory Board. She also maintains professional memberships in the American Educational Research Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the Michigan Reading Association.
