RecWell Stories

"I participate with Recreation & Wellness as a means to find likeminded people who are striving to improve themselves. The programs provide amazing resources, but a byproduct was the networking and connection-making with those that attended as well.

Exercising was always considered a chore before I came to university, but after my arrival, it was my newfound passion. I utilized the Rec Center as a means to relax and set aside my responsibilities externally, and just focus on myself and my own goals internally. Sometimes, I felt I got caught up in the daily grind and would put my health on the back burner, but the Rec Center doesn't allow any excuses for this and enabled me to push myself. Best part: it became a place to go with friends and even the staff was so kind and easy to befriend. The atmosphere is very welcoming, even though at times a bit intimidating. Yet...that intimidation was something that would spark personal reflection, as I was comparing myself to people who have been lifting and running for a long time, and I needed to turn my focus internally and work on achieving my own goals and not the goals of the ones next to me. Overall, RecWell provides a great space for physical and mental growth!

My involvement with Recreation & Wellness has impacted my experience at GVSU because it was the headquarters for the friends I made and truly was my escape from reality. It allowed me to breath and regroup myself whilst improving myself and meeting new people."
