GVSU Women's Basketball wins national championship

The GVSU women's basketball team cemented its place in the history books on Friday after defeating the California State Dominguez-Hills Toros in the Division II Tournament Championship. 

The 70-58 victory marks the second national championship in program history, the last coming in 2006.

The Lakers set a program high 38-2 record this season, breaking the record set by GVSU's last women’s basketball championship team. The Lakers' season included a 19-1 conference record, an undefeated home record and a GLIAC Championship en route to a first seed in the Division II Tournament.

GVSU defeated a California State Dominguez-Hills team that finished the year with a 36-2 record, including winning the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship.

Mantella said. “This title reflects the consistent excellence that GVSU women's basketball is known for, and it’s been a joy to watch their season-long journey to this title. These student-athletes embody success on and off the court, and Lakers around the world are celebrating with them tonight!”
