West Michigan companies shine in Newsweek's 'Green Rankings'
January 02, 2018
Several companies in the region have received national and global recognition by Newsweek for their environmentally friendly practices.
Newsweek released its 2017 “Green Rankings,” an environmental performance assessment of the world’s largest publicly traded companies in the world and the U.S., and four West Michigan companies are in the rankings, including Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corporation.
Ron Voglewede, director of global sustainability at Whirlpool Corporation, said its “innovation” and “efficient” products earned the company the recognition, as evidenced in its recently released 2016 “Sustainability Report.”
“This distinction is a testament to our commitment to sustainability, which spans our supply chain and sustainable material sourcing initiatives, to our goal of sending zero waste to landfills and manufacturing products that have a low environmental impact for consumers to use in their own homes,” Voglewede said.
“We are proud of all we continue to achieve in sustainability initiatives corporation-wide.”
Whirlpool Corporation ranks at No. 50 on the “U.S. 500” ranking and No. 82 on the “Global 500” ranking.
Other West Michigan companies in the rankings include Kellogg Company, Stryker and SpartanNash.
Six other Michigan companies also made the rankings.
Methodology
The “U.S. 500” and “Global 500” from Newsweek’s “Green Rankings” take the following factors into account: energy productivity; greenhouse gas productivity; water productivity; waste productivity; green revenue; sustainability pay; sustainability board committee; and audited environmental metrics.
Monetary fines and potentially harmful products or services may deduct from a company’s final score.
The rankings are further sub-divided into “Best in Industry Global” and “Best in Industry U.S.” rankings.
