Space Policies

GENERAL FACILITY RULES:              

  1. Participants utilize all facilities "at your own risk".
  2. In the event of an emergency, please contact staff. If you experience any dizziness, faintness, or experience chest pain or pressure, immediately stop activity.  Seek assistance from staff or the control desk area.
  3. Seek your physician’s guidance before starting or significantly increasing your exercise program.
  4. The GVSU Pool is a monitored facility. No access to facilities is granted without checking in at the Front Desk and presenting valid identification
  5. Users may not enter the facility under the influence of alcohol or controlled substances.
  6. Appropriate attire is required. This includes non-marking clean shoes. Shirts and workout gear is required. 
  7. Book bags and personal items are your responsibility. Please secure in a locker or cubby, provided at the facility. Do not bring valuable items into the facility.
  8. Any display of poor conduct, abusive language, fighting, or willful destruction of University property may result in loss of facility use privileges. If appropriate, other actions will be taken including disciplinary and legal action.
  9. Parents or legal guardians must accompany youths under 14 years of age.
  10. Animals are prohibited, unless assisting others or in special circumstances approved by an authorized person.
  11. Smoking and tobacco substances are prohibited.
  12. Foods and beverages are permitted only in areas designated. They are not permitted in most activity areas. Exceptions would include bottled water.
  13. Any posting of materials must be approved by a facility authority.
  14. Bicycles, rollerblades, and skateboards are prohibited.
  15. Weapons of all types are prohibited.
  16. The GVSU Rec Center and Pool incorporate the entire Student Code of GVSU into its rules. All county, state, and federal laws currently in effect will apply as needed.
  17. The staff reserves the right to interpret and enforce policies and procedures in its best interests. Such interpretation will not likely be in writing.
  18. The on-duty supervisors have authority over all fitness area conduct and use of equipment, and may expel a user from the facility for failure to follow instructions.
  19. All personal trainers must be employed by GVSU Recreation Wellnes who holds the exclusive right to all personal training in the facility. Any personal trainers not employed by GVSU  Recreation Wellness are not permitted to train clients in our facility. If we suspect that you are training clients in our facility you may be asked to leave or have your Recreation Center privileges revoked or suspended.

GVSU Pool Specific Rules:

  1. All participants must shower before entering into the pool.
  2. All participants under the age of 12 must be supervised by an adult.
  3. All participants using the 3-M diving board must be at least 16 years old.
  4. No running, rough play, or excessive noise in the pool, on the pool deck, or in the locker rooms.
  5. No food or drink allowed onto the pool deck (bottled water is allowed).
  6. No pets allowed into the facility. Service dogs excluded see Rule 17.
  7. No SCUBA or snorkeling equipment allowed without prior approval by Management.
  8. Do not distract on-duty Lifeguards from responsibilities to the patrons or the pool.
  9. Do not participate in any “breath-holding” games.
  10. Do not swim if you have communicable or infectious diseases.
  11. Do not hang from the lane lines.
  12. Obey the Lifeguard at all times.
  13. Lifeguard’s have the right to limit or regulate: a) activities, b) equipment use, c) facility use.
  14. Diving is allowed only in designated area.
  15. Floatation devices must attach to the child and be approved by Lifeguard.
  16. Swimming equipment must stay in the shallow end of the pool.
  17. Individuals with a disability requiring an accommodation, please see a Lifeguard.
  18. Guests are responsible for their own towels.  If needed, please visit the Rec. Center Welcome Desk.
  19. Swim diapers are required of all children who wear diapers.
  20. Starting blocks are for the Varsity Swimming & Diving team use only.
  21. The use of alcohol, drugs or tobacco is prohibited within the pool facility.
  22. Grand Valley State University’s Athletic & Recreation Facilities Management takes no responsibility in damaged, lost or stolen items from locker rooms or pool deck.
  23. Grand Valley State University’s Athletic & Recreation Facilities Management takes no responsibility for any personal injury resulting from use of our pool.
