Raleigh J. Finkelstein Athletic Village
The Raleigh J. Finkelstein Athletic Village fieldhouse structure was originally constructed in 1982 for a cost of $16.5 million. The center portion of the facility houses the Laker Athletics administrative offices, many of the Laker Athletic coaches offices, men's and women's locker rooms, the Laker Athletics weight room, a gymnastic room, dance studio, multipurpose room, several classrooms, and 4 racquetball courts. Most notably however, the Fieldhouse complex is home to the Arena, Aquatics Center, and the Outdoor Adventure Center.
Arena
The Arena consists of three regulation wooden courts and is home to championship Laker teams in both men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball. While used as the training and competition center for Laker Athletics, the arena continues to be used for concerts, lectures, student life events, many other miscellaneous local and regional events, as well as campus recreation and sport club activities. All in all, the main arena structure is approx. 45,000 sq. ft. and has seating for just over 3,000 spectators. Recent notable improvements include two state of the art video boards in 2011 and a brand new main arena court in 2014.
The Arena is not available for drop-in use. It is strictly used for Laker Athletics, Sport Clubs, Intramurals, and other scheduled events.
Pool
Built in 1982, the pool contains six 25 meter swimming lanes, two 1 meter diving boards and 1 3 meter diving board, and has seating for up to 450 spectators. The pool is used primarily for GVSU swimming and diving team practice, but is also used for open swim, lap swim, classes, and community programs. Current Michigan competitive standards require a depth of seven feet at the starting blocks, which have placed limitations on home competition and events. GVSU still hosts regular season swimming and diving meets but they move their larger meets and championship events to Jenison High School . Pool use is free for GVSU students, faculty/staff, and for all current membership card holders. Non-members can purchase a daily user pass for $5.
Open lap/swim times are limited so please check the Hours of Operation Page or contact the Recreation Center front desk at (616) 331-3313 prior to your visit.
Outdoor Adventure Center
The Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) is located in room B170 of the fieldhouse and is the GVSU student, faculty, and staff resource for outdoor adventure activities. Within the OAC is a towering 27 ft. climbing wall as well as a wide array of outdoor gear available to rent. Whether you are looking for gear for your next epic adventure, information on opportunities for local outdoor recreation, or for clinics to help improve future outdoor experiences, the OAC can help!
