Lindsey Schmidt and Marissa Gonzales
March 30, 2022
Lindsey Schmidt is a third year student and a double major in biomedical science and chemistry. She participates in undergraduate research and has been a member of the American Sign Language and Culture Club (ASLCC) since her freshman year.
Previously, Lindsey had been a member of the sign language club in high school and was interested in learning more about ASL and Deaf culture. During her first year, Lindsey’s roommate encouraged her to go to a general meeting for ASLCC. For Lindsey, ASLCC is "a really good learning opportunity and opens [conversations] up to students who are deaf or hard of hearing."
Another member of ASLCC is Marissa Gonzales. Marissa is a third-year student graduating this semester, majoring in communication sciences and disorders. She became interested in learning ASL in 10th grade, which led her to join ASLCC during her freshman year at Grand Valley. Marissa found ASLCC when she was scrolling through LakerLink and writing down clubs that interested her. "This seemed like an obvious choice," she says.
Marissa is currently the president and previously served as the
secretary. She encourages others to join ASLCC because of the
important skills that she gained through the organization like public
speaking and presenting.
If you are interested in continuing your
learning of ASL, consider joining the American
Sign Language and Culture Club. Want to explore another culture
or language? Check out LakerLink for a list of
organizations pertaining to your interests.
