Budgeting

Planning a budget for your everyday and weekly/monthly expenses while abroad is important to make sure that you will have sufficient funds to cover your entire time abroad. There are a number of resources available that can assist you in your budget plan for your study abroad program including:

  • Living Expenses - Several websites will tell you the cost of everyday items in countries around the world and even provide you with a comparison to your home town
  • Currency Conversion - It is important to understand the conversion rate so that you know how much money you are spending. Keep in mind that exchange will fluctuate throughout your time abroad.

Lonely Planet guidebooks or other travel guidebooks offer a lot of details on travel costs, recommended places to stay, exchange rates, and more. PIC has a library of guidebooks in the office if you want to take a look before buying.

Talking to students who recently participated in the same program or students from the program where you will be studying is always helpful in gaining a better idea of overall costs and spending tips. You can contact the Padnos International Center for assistance in connecting with other students.

Build in a cushion for unexpected expenses. Flight delays, medical costs, and currency exchange fluctuations can all have an impact on your budget.
