Spotlights
Kate Millett, Uruguay & Thailand
My Grand Valley study abroad experience was a non-traditional one, where I spent two semesters in two countries and two continents. This was the best decision I have ever made for myself. My first semester in Uruguay let me explore a culture I was more familiar with and really become fluent with my Spanish. Then I went to Thailand where I learned a new language, was introduced to an unfamiliar way of life and went from being a tourist to becoming part of a community. From this year, I gained the courage to travel independently, met people from all over the world, hugged an elephant (highlight) and widened my mind-view to worldly perspectives outside of Michigan - outside of the United States. I came back with a better understanding of global issues and social dynamics within my own community. I gained confidence in myself as a leader and while I am finding ways to explore my role as a global citizen back home, I am also counting down the days before I can visit even more countries to call “home”.
