United Kingdom Visa Guidelines
The Padnos International Center (PIC) provides the general information below as a service to GVSU students. We strive to maintain accurate information regarding visa procedures, however, changes to policies and procedures may occur frequently without our knowledge. Students are responsible for obtaining the appropriate visa for their program and must consult the consulate for the most up to date information on application procedures.
Please look over the visa information carefully and do not delay, as visa procedures are time sensitive.

Do I need a visa? |
Every US citizen traveling to the United Kingdom no matter the length of stay is required to obtain an Electronic Authorisation (ETA). Students studying in the United Kingdom for less than 6 months will be allowed to enter the UK on the “Student Visitor Route,” without prior entry clearance. Students who are studying abroad in the UK for more than 6 months or who plan to undertake a part-time job, will be required to apply for a Tier 4 Student Visa. Student Visitor (1 semester or less) – You do not need to apply for a visa prior to entry to the UK but you do need to collect the required documents to present to customs and immigration when entering the UK. NOTE: Do not travel through the Republic of Ireland when traveling to the UK because this will invalidate your opportunity to receive a student visitor visa upon arrival. |

15-30 days. Applicants are not required to appear at the British Consulate. |

ETA Instructions |
You can apply online or through the UK ETA app. It has been suggested that the process is more streamlined through the app. Who needs an ETA?: All non-visa nationals seeking to go to the UK as a visitor for up to 6 months or those seeking to transit through the UK, including simple layovers. Cost: £10 via credit card online Duration of ETA: Valid for two years from the date of issue, or until passport expiration, whichever is sooner. Valid for multiple journeys. Must be valid for entirety of stay. Required Documents to Apply: Passport, contact information, photo of the applicant (it can be taken within the app), and method of payment. (You will not be asked for travel details) Email Verification: Your email address will need to be verified via a code sent to your email. You have 10 minutes to enter the code. Processing Time: 3 business days What does the ETA look like?: It is digitally linked to your passport, you do not need to show a paper copy, but can print confirmation of your ETA for your records. |

Additional Information |
All applicants for a Tier 4 visa will be required to obtain biometric information at a USCIS office. The nearest USCIS office is in Kentwood, MI.
