Director of GVSU Supplemental Writing Skills (SWS) Program

The Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies seeks an experienced teacher and visionary leader to administer and direct the SWS program at GVSU.


The mission of the SWS program is to enable students to write effectively for multiple purposes and audiences through specific instruction in Supplemental Writing Skills courses and the integration of writing across the whole curriculum.


The SWS Director will:
● Oversee and manage the Supplemental Writing Skills program, including the SWS strategic plan, assessment, and budget.
● Advise faculty about effective integration of writing instruction into their courses and develop programming to support best practices in the teaching of writing;
● Collaborate with writing center on program goals, university writing initiatives, and faculty writing support;
● Serve as Ex Officio member of the University Writing Skills Committee; and represent SWS campus wide; participate in the Brooks College Leadership Council activities, as appropriate
● Participate in professional development activities, such as attending and presenting at Writing Across the Curriculum or Writing Center conferences and networking with peer programs both locally and nationally;
● Work with and participate in supervision of shared PSS support colleague

The director will report to the Dean of the Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies. This position begins in August 2025 and comes with 3 credits of reassigned time each semester. Initial appointment length is normally 3 years (renewable), but terms are negotiable, particularly in terms ofa forthcoming sabbatical leave. This search is internal to Grand Valley State University.


Qualifications:

  • Tenured faculty member at Grand Valley preferred; tenure-track faculty will be considered
  • Experience and/or expertise in mentoring and/or providing professional development opportunities to faculty
  • Experience in successfully teaching writing skills in a disciplinary or multidisciplinary context—particularly in courses that primarily serve majors
  •  Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and leadership skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in Composition and Rhetoric, English with a specialization in Composition & Rhetoric, Education with a specialization in literacy or the teaching of writing, or related field.
  • Ongoing scholarly interest in Writing in the Disciplines (WID) and/or Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)
