Established in 1990, the Richard E. Flanders Scholarship is a distinguished merit award the GVS University Club presents to GVSU students majoring in anthropology or a related academic concentration. It honors the legacy of anthropology professor and long-time Club member "Doc" Flanders and his pioneer archeological excavation of the Blendon Landing area on the Allendale Campus. Included in property once owned by the Club, the land was traded to GVSU for permanent room space in The Meadows Clubhouse, now home to the University Club. GVSU will forever preserve the Blendon Landing area as a historic and archaeological site.

Students applying for this scholarship will have demonstrated their commitment to the discipline of anthropology through interest, laboratory, academic and/or field work. Students must be attending GVSU full-time and have at least sophomore standing when applying. Demonstrated financial need may be significant in the award of the scholarship, but is not necessarily the sole criteria. Selection is made by the University Club Board of Trustees and an Anthropology Department faculty sub-committee. Awards are announced at the end of April each year.

2023-2024 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS:

Scholarships totaling $2,000 were awarded to two students for the 2023-24 academic year. Our recipients have completed valuable field experiences.
