Applying to GVSU
Step 1: Research Programs
Explore degree programs and find the one that fits your career goals.
GVSU offers multiple majors, minors, certificates and badges.
Step 2: Prepare Application Materials
To apply to GVSU, you will need:
- A completed application.
- Request official transcripts from your high school OR previous institutions. Direct all transcripts to [email protected]
- Consider sending your ACT or SAT test results. This is NOT required for admission, but if you are aiming for our top scholarships you must provide your test scores for consideration. Additionally, if you are seeking to showcase strong math proficiency we encourage you to submit your test scores.
GVSU waives application fees for veterans.

Step 3: Complete and Submit Your Application
Undergraduate and graduate applications can be submitted online.
Undergraduate application deadline is March 1st.
Deadlines for graduate programs and certificates vary. Please check with your specific program for application deadlines.

Apply for VA benefits as soon as you are enrolled. The VA can take up to 30 days to process your request - don't wait until the last minute!

Post 9/11 GI Bill® Chapter 33
If you’ve served on active duty after September 10, 2001, you may qualify for the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33). To qualify, at least one of these must be true:
- You served at least 90 days on active duty (either all at once or with breaks in service) on or after September 11, 2001, or
- You received a Purple Heart on or after September 11, 2001, and were honorably discharged after any amount of service, or
- You served for at least 30 continuous days (all at once, without a break in service) on or after September 11, 2001, and were honorably discharged with a service-connected disability, or
- You’re a dependent child using benefits transferred by a qualifying Veteran or service member

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) - Chapter 31
If you’re a service member or Veteran and have a disability that was caused—or made worse—by your active-duty service and that limits your ability to work or prevents you from working, you may be able to get employment support or services to help you live as independently as possible.
To qualify, you must have a service-connected disability rating of at least 10%.
Once you have applied and are accepted, you need to have a consultation with a VA VR&E counselor to determine your career or education pathway.
Montgomery GI Bill® - Veterans, Active Duty, Reservists, National Guard
The Montgomery GI Bill® provides education benefits to individuals who have served in the Armed Forces. Eligible service members can receive financial assistance for a range of educational programs, including college degrees, vocational training, and apprenticeships. To qualify, individuals must pay into the program during their service and meet specific service requirements. Benefits can be used for up to 36 months, making it an excellent resource for those seeking to further their education and career.
Michigan National Guard State Tuition Assistance Program - MINGSTAP
MINGSTAP is available to members of the Michigan National Guard who (1) are active in the National Guard (including the traditional service of one weekend/month and two weeks/year; (2) are not absent without leave or under MCMJ or UCMJ charges; and (3) meet the additional criteria established by the TAG consistent with the guard's recruiting and retention requirements.

Federal Tuition Assistance Programs
The Military Tuition Assistance (TA) Program helps active duty service members pay for college courses while they are off duty. The program can cover up to 100% of tuition costs, with a maximum of $250 per credit hour. The annual limit is $4500.
Service members need to first check with an educational counselor for the specifics involving TA by visiting their local installation education office or by going online to a virtual education center.
Each service branch has its own application form and procedures. Please carefully view the information listed for each service branch.
VA Benefit Certification
Once you application for benefits has been approved, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility.
Submit your Certificate of Eligibility to [email protected].
Once GVSU receives your COE, you will be connected with a VA Certifying Official. They will assist you with the remaining steps of receiving your VA Benefits.
Your GVSU Certifying Official will be your point of contact for further certification throughout the year.
