TRIO Upward Bound - Detroit

The Grand Valley State University TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Detroit program is designed to assist high school students from traditionally underserved backgrounds to reach their potential by earning a college degree.

UB serves high school students who meet the income guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Education, and who are first-generation college students and primarly supports students at University Prep district high schools.

Program Eligibility

  • Participants should be enrolled in or plan to enroll in University Prep district high schools (UPREP): University Prep Academy, University Prep Art & Design, and University Prep Science & Math in Detroit.
  • Be a potential first-generation college student. This means that a participant will be the first in his/her family to earn a four-year college degree; and/or
  • Meet the income guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Education.

Once accepted, students participate until their high school graduation.

Program Highlights

The GVSU TRIO Upward Bound Detroit Program is funded to serve 60 students between University Prep Academy, University Prep Art & Design, and University Prep Science & Math in Detroit. The program provides:

  • A supportive learning environment with academic instruction, tutoring, and advising.
  • Individualized support and encouragement for all students.
  • An intensive six-week summer residential program in Allendale and Detroit, with academic, cultural, and social activities.
  • College campus tours.
  • Cultural field trips in and out-of-state.
  • Assistance in the search for financial aid and scholarships, as well as support in completing the college application and admissions process.
  • Peer mentoring.
  • Community service.
  • Leadership growth and development.
  • Academic year celebration.

All services are provided at no cost to the student or family.
