As Curator of Exhibitions and Collections for the Art Gallery, Joel:

• Manages exhibition planning and collection acquisition-based initiatives and activities
• Assists in the strategic development of the university’s art collection and works with stakeholders to foster its use
• Provides curatorial leadership and works collaboratively with others to develop a distinctive and dynamic exhibition program at all university galleries
• Assists with placement and installation of the permanent collection throughout all university buildings and outdoor spaces

Joel has over 20 years of experience in the museum field and higher education as an administrator and curator. He has organized more than 200 exhibitions and currently serves as a peer reviewer for the Institute of Museum and Library Services granting program and on various committees at museums and non-profit organizations. Joel joined the GVSU Art Gallery team in 2016 after serving for 14 years as the Director of Exhibitions at Calvin University. Before that, he served as the Director of Education at the Holland Historical Trust and has been an independent curator, consultant, and exhibition designer. Joel received his B.A. in History with minors in Art and French from Calvin University, and received his M.A. in Historical Administration from Eastern Illinois University, alongside an assistantship at The Tarble Arts Center.
