Student Health Insurance

GVSU currently doesn't require domestic students to provide evidence that they're covered by health insurance. However, we strongly encourage all of our students to be insured.

WHY GET HEALTH INSURANCE?
Please be aware that the University's insurance programs do not cover injury or illness sustained by a student; even if the injury or illness is a result of an educational opportunity, a sponsored activity, or other incidents that occur either on or off campus.  Please review your medical insurance coverage to ensure that it is both adequate for your needs, and applicable in the State of Michigan. If you are studying or working abroad, it is particularly important to ensure that your personal health insurance will respond in the territories where you are traveling.

If You're Currently Uninsured

Healthy Michigan Plan
The Healthy Michigan Plan provides health care benefits to Michigan residents at a low cost so that more people can have health care coverage.

For more info, call 1-855-789-5610 or visit the website.

Federal Health Insurance Exchange
The Health Insurance Exchange is the place where people without health care insurance can find information about health insurance options and also purchase health care insurance. Information can also be found regarding eligibility for help with paying premiums and reducing out-of-pocket costs.

For more info, call 1-800-318-2596 or visit the website.

Students who are not United States residents

All transactions, communications and administration of the insurance products and services are strictly between the user and the service providers. GVSU does not benefit financially in any way from these insurance products.

A few Points -

  • An insurance card is still needed
  • it's important to connect with LewerMark to ensure your diagnosis is covered prior to your visit.
  • Insurance requires a referral to be sent to them (this is unique to LewerMark) for certain specialty offices such as physical therapy. The referral also needs to be signed by only a doctor (MD or DO only) for it to be approved.
