Graduate Certificate in Advanced Energy

Graduate Certificate Programs

The School of Engineering offers graduate certificate programs. A certificate is an official endorsement of completion of a set of related courses focused on a specific field. At least two certificate courses must be completed at GVSU. A course in a certificate program may not be used to meet the course requirements of more than one certificate. Provided that all prerequisite courses are previously completed, a certificate program may ordinarily be completed in two to three semesters.

To earn a graduate certificate, students must be admitted to a graduate certificate program and complete a set of required courses appropriate for graduate studies, with a grade of at least "C" in each of these courses. The admission requirements to a graduate certificate program are the same as those for admission to the M.S.E. program, as stated in the catalog; students who are not enrolled in a graduate program must apply for admission to the graduate certificate normally before completing 50 percent of the required number of courses in the chosen certificate. All graduate courses in a certificate may be applied toward completion of an M.S.E.-degree emphasis. Students who have been admitted to the M.S.E. program and also wish to earn a graduate certificate must notify both the Graduate Studies office and engineering graduate program chairperson of their intention to seek both the M.S.E. degree and graduate certificate.

Graduate Certificate in any of the M.S.E. Emphases
Students may earn a graduate certificate in any of the M.S.E. emphases, as described in the catalog, by completing a specified set of courses. A graduate certificate in any M.S.E. emphasis requires at least three courses to provide sustained coverage of that emphasis. Graduate Certificate in Advanced Energy

The advanced energy industries seek engineering and science graduates with a sound engineering or science education augmented with knowledge of energy as applied to advanced energy systems for electrified vehicles and power management. The advanced energy certificate provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to these growing industries and their job markets.

The graduate certificate is tailored for post-baccalaureate students in the Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) degree program and nondegree-seeking graduate students with the appropriate pre-requisite knowledge. Students who are not enrolled in a graduate program must apply for admission to the graduate certificate after completing their first certificate course. Undergraduate students with the appropriate pre-requisite knowledge may also be awarded this graduate certificate, but only after they have earned a baccalaureate degree.

Students earn the graduate certificate by successfully completing three certificate courses (9 credits) chosen from:

  • EGR 563 - Alternative Energy Systems and Applications Credits: 3
  • EGR 577- Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Battery Systems Credits: 3
