Japanese Minor
REQUIREMENTS FOR A JAPANESE MINOR
The minor in Japanese is designed for students in a range of majors who wish to enhance their primary field with proficiency in Japanese language and understanding of Japanese culture. It is a standalone minor, not attached to any specific major. The minor expects elementary Japanese as a prerequisite and thus begins at the 200-level. JPN 101 and JPN 102 will not be counted toward the required credit count for the minor.
The Japanese minor requires a minimum of 20 credits, including the following required courses.
- JPN 201 - Intermediate Japanese I: Language and Culture (4 credits)
- JPN 202 - Intermediate Japanese II: Language and Culture (4 credits)
AND a total of 12 credits from among the following elective courses, at least 4 of which must be language

- JPN 280 - Special Topics in Japanese (1 to 4 credits)
- JPN 311 - Advanced Intermediate Japanese Conversation (1 credit)
- JPN 312 - Readings in Advanced Intermediate Japanese (1 credit)
- JPN 315 - Japanese-English Translation (1 credit)
- JPN 316 - Understanding Japanese Media (1 credit)
- JPN 317 - Approaches to Japanese Pedagogy (1 credit)
- JPN 318 - Topics in Advanced-Intermediate Japanese Language (1 to 3 credits)
Non-language electives
- JPN 221 - Pre-modern Japanese Literature and Culture (to 1600) (3 credits)
- JPN 222 - Early Modern Japanese Literature and Theatre (1600-1868) (3 credits)
