About the CLAS Cluster Hire
The arts and humanities disciplines at GVSU anchor students’ examinations of the human experience in and of the world—what it was, what it is, what it could be. The arts and humanities cultivate habits of critical thought, foster commitments to democratic citizenship, and center the mind as the wellspring of creative production and high-impact learning.
In the 2023-24 academic year, CLAS proposes to hire a cohort of five tenure-track faculty in Classics, History, English, and Visual and Media Arts who will be devoted to innovative curricular and multidisciplinary research initiatives tied to the theme of Imagining and Sustaining Equitable Communities.
The cohort will work with other humanities teacher-scholars, writers, and artists/designers in CLAS and in other parts of GVSU to explore this theme by considering, in particular, the relationships between human communities and the technologies and environments that influence them. Their work could include approaches to technology, environment, and society such as:
-
Pursuit of equitable societies with sustainable ecosystems.
-
Examination of the ways we imagine and reciprocally create human and non-human environments.
-
Creative or scholarly inquiry involving material and/or social practices, and the development of related critical/cultural discourses.
-
Embracing change dynamics and considering innovative approaches to mitigating or solving problems related to technology and its influence on society.
-
Ethical critique of technology and its effects on society.
Candidates whose artistic/research portfolios manifest public-facing or community-engaged scholarship, multidisciplinary collaboration, and/or a demonstrated digital humanities background are especially encouraged to apply.
