History
Grand Valley State University Rowing has hosted the Lubbers Cup Regatta since 1996. The regatta is named for GVSU President Emeritus Arend (Don) Lubbers who led the university from 1969 to 2001 and is a longtime supporter of the Laker Navy.
Originally hosted on the Grand River at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids, the event was hosted on Spring Lake from 2010 to 2018 before returning to Riverside Park in 2019. Prior to expanding and becoming the Lubbers Cup, the event was an annual race between the Grand Valley men and Michigan State men and the trophy for that tradition is still awarded to the faster of the two varsity crews at Lubbers Cup. In the 1960's and 1970's GVSU also hosted an annual invitational regatta each May at Riverside Park.
