WYOMING, MICHIGAN- Nine competitors, including four alumni, competed in the 8th Annual Alumni Match at the Grand Rapids Rifle and Pistol Club on April 14th. The match faced members of the current team against former members in three position smallbore rifle, standing air rifle, and air pistol.
In the smallbore competition, the current team compiled a score of 786 (out of 900). The current team had contributing scores shot by Alexander Straith (271), Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (267), and Katheryn Karas (248). Tristan Bruizeman (245) and John Martin (208) were alternates. The alumni team posted 795 points to win the smallbore match. Alumni scoring team members included Cameron Zwart (275), April Chernoby (264), and Adam Gleason (256). The match format was 10 shots each in prone, standing, and kneeling positions on the metric target. Gleason was permitted to shoot on the conventional target, since he last shot smallbore in 2008.
In the air rifle competition, the current team complied a score of 648 (out of 872). The current team had contributing scores from Straith (331.5) and Karas (316.5). The alumni team, with Chernoby (322.4) and Zwart (315.2) shot a 637.6. The match consisted of 40 shots in standing position. Although precision class rifles were used, no other gear was permitted.
For the first time in the history of the event, air pistol was added. The current team dominated the event, 1147-959. Martin (325), Bruizeman (286), Karas (281), and Coulston-Gerigk (255) fired the contributing team scores for the current team. Straith (184) was an alternate. The alumni team had contributing scores from Zwart (277), Gerry Cooke (272), Gleason (217), and Chernoby (193). Cooke, Gleason, Chernoby had no prior air pistol experience.
In addition to shooting, all competitors enjoyed pizza provided by Leroy McCormick. Cooke was the lone charter club member present. Chernoby and Zwart continue their streak of shooing in every alumni match since inception. This was the first alumni match for Gleason.
The mission of the GVSU Rifle & Pistol Club is to provide all students with the opportunity to participate in shooting sports, with an emphasis in three-position smallbore rifle, international air rifle, and air pistol. Regardless of skill or ability, all members can have a safe and enjoyable time interacting with fellow students and engaging in marksmanship. All equipment is provided, including guns, ammunition, and targets. The club meets Tuesdays from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM and Thursdays 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM during the school year at the Grand Rapids Rifle & Pistol Club (1331 Nagel Ave SW, Wyoming). Practice attendance is not mandatory to be a member of the club; however, regular practice attendance is expected.
