Permanent link for GVSU Club Swim at the NDSC Irish Invitational on January 11, 2022

On December 4th, 2021 the GVSU swim club attended the NDSC Irish Invitational. They competed against a total of 15 teams, placing 13th overall with 67 points. 12 swimmers made the drive to Notre Dame, and for a few this was their first meet of the semester. Out of those 12 swimmers the women earned 33 points, putting them in 12th, while the men earned 34 points, putting them in 12th as well. Our distance swimmers of the meet, Jonah Cox and Veronica Lidy, earned us the most points. Lidy scored 9 points in the 200 IM (2:37.46) and 15 points in the 500 Freestyle (6:23.85). She contributed 24 points to the team. While Cox scored 9 points in the 500 Freestyle (5:43.44) and 9 points in the 100 Backstroke (1:03.76). He also gained us another 18 points. However, they weren’t the only ones to do good as we had a lot of great swims at this meet. Dom Ferracciolo earned us another 9 points with his swim in the 200 Breaststroke (2:29.77). Ferracciolo said that it felt good to get back in the water again. He enjoyed being with the team and getting the opportunity to cheer on his friends. Rosie Champion also had some good swims in her 50 freestyle (29.34), 50 butterfly (32.25), 100 IM (1:17.69), and her 50 breaststroke (39.00). Champion said, “Notre Dame was a great time! I did my personal best of the season and I believe that the team as a whole did pretty well! Though we didn’t get the most points of the meet, it was still a great environment all around! Everyone on the team was cheering and supporting each other the entire time. It was an amazing feeling to see the team be all together and happy to be there!”

Permanent link for Rifle & Pistol Participates In Orion Monthly Match on January 10, 2022

WYOMING, MI – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club participated in three Orion Scoring System Monthly Virtual Matches in December. Orion's Monthly Virtual Matches are a fun way for users to compare scores with other teams and shooters from across the country. The air pistol match consisted of 40 shots at 10 meters, the air rifle competition consisted of 60 shots also at 10 meters, and the smallbore competition consisted of 60 shots fired in prone, standing, and kneeling position at 50 feet.

Two Lakers participated in the air pistol event. Leading the way was John Martin (Holly, Michigan). Martin posted a top stage of 89 (out of 100) on his way to a 342 (out of 400). His score was good for 3rd place overall. Additionally, it was a season-best. Jacob Schorr (East Grand Rapids, Michigan) shot a 248 for 11th place. As a team, the pair was second place overall.

Leading the way in the air rifle event was Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan). He posted a score of 586.8 (out of 654), good for sixth place overall. He was joined by Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (Wayne, Michigan), and Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan), in posting a team score of 1738.1, good for third place overall. Coulston-Gerigk shot a 583.7, with a high target of 99.4. Karas shot 567.6.

In smallbore, Straith led the Lakers with a score of 546 (out of 600). The score was good for second place. Coulston-Gergik finished third, with a score of 533. Schorr displayed his versatility in rounding out the team score with a tally of 467, finishing sixth. Together, they finished first place as a team with 1546 (out of 1800). Karas finished fourth with a score of 532.

Permanent link for Rifle Club Wins International University Air Rifle Match on December 13, 2021

WYOMING, MICHIGAN – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club participated in the 11th Annual International University Air Rifle Match in early November. The match was a postal match. A postal match is a competition in which competitors fire separately on their home ranges and exchange scores. The match consisted of 40 total shots fired from the standing position at 10 meters. In total, Lakers made up eight of the 32 individual entries and two of the eight-team entries. Competitors hailed from multiple states and Switzerland.

Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (Wayne, Michigan) led all Lakers with a score of 374 (out of 400). She posted target scores of 96 (out of 100), 95, 92, and 91. Her efforts resulted in a first-place finish overall. Coulston-Gerigk finished second in 2020 with a score of 368. The Lakers landed two others in the top 10; Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan) was second with 360 and Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) was fifth with 352.

The afore mentioned athletes were joined by Tristian Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan in posting a team score of 1415 (out of 1600). The score was best among all entries for the third consecutive season. Conference rival, Georgia Military College finished in second, 30 points behind.

A second Laker team, comprised of John Martin (Holly, Michigan), Jacob Schorr (East Grand Rapids, Michigan), Joseph Martin (South Bend, Indiana), and Mahmoud Salih (Caledonia, Michigan) was fifth overall with a score of 1201.

Three Lakers participated in the air pistol event. Leading the way was Tristan Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan). Bruizeman posted a top stage of 84 (out of 100) on his way to a 310 (out of 400). His score was good for 13th place overall. Close on Bruizeman’s heels was John Martin (Holly, Michigan). Martin finished in 15th place with a 304. In the team event, Martin and Bruizeman were joined by Joseph Martin (South Bend, Indiana) to post a 854 (out of 1200), good for fifth place.

Permanent link for Rifle Competes In Walter Cup on December 3, 2021

MORGANTOWN, WV – For the first time, the Grand Valley State University Rifle & Pistol Club traveled to West Virginia University to participate in the Walther Cup on November 21st. The precision air rifle event consisted of 60 shots fired in the standing position. The match was identified as a national ranking competition by USA Shooting. There were four 2020 Tokyo Olympians and a 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist in the field.

MOREHEAD, KY – After a one-year pause, the Grand Valley State University Rifle & Pistol Club returned to Morehead State University Rifle to participate in the Eagle Open for the fourth time on November 20th. The event consisted of matches in both three position smallbore rifle (60 shots fired in the kneeling, prone, and standing positions) and precision air rifle (60 shots fired in the standing position).

In the smallbore, the Lakers were led by Cassie Coulston-Geirgk (Wayne, Michigan). She posted a score of 547-14x (out of 600-60x), was good for 18th place, and was tops amongst collegiate competitors. Close behind was Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) in 20th place with a personal best score of 544-14x. Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan) shot a 538-10x for 25th place. Rounding out the team score was Tristan Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan) with a score of 481-7x in 43rd place. Together, the four posted a team score of 2110-45x, a season-high.

Coulston-Gerigk continued her strong shooting in air rifle as well. She was the top collegiate with a personal best score of 577-30x (out of 600-60x), good for 12th place. Straith was 40th with a score of 549-14x. Karas continues to make a statement in her first year by posting a score of 547-15x for 41st place. Bruizeman, another first-year shooter, shot a personal best 531-8x for 46th place. The team score was 2204, another season-high.

Not to be outdone by his peers, John Martin (Holly, Michigan) set a record of his own during the team dinner before the match. Martin consumed 16 habanero chicken wings on his way to earning his place on the “Wall of Flame” at Wings, Etc. Grill & Pub (Fort Wayne, Indiana).

WYOMING, MI – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club participated in a postal match against the State University of New York at Plattsburgh Marksmanship Club in the month of November. A postal match is a competition in which the competitors fire separately on their home range and exchange scores. The teams faced off in three-position smallbore rifle (60 shots fired in the prone, standing, and kneeling positions) and precision air rifle (60 shots fired in the standing position).

In the smallbore team competition, the Lakers defeated the Cardinals by 135 points, 2103 to 1968 (out of 2400). In the air rifle team competition, the Lakers prevailed by 188 points, 2115 to 1927 (out of 2400). The aggregate team scores were calculated by the top four individual scores on each roster. Combined, the Lakers defeated the Cardinals by 323 points.

In the smallbore individual competition, Lakers occupied the top two spots. The top shooter, Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (Wayne, Michigan), posted a score of 555 (out of 600), a personal best. Alexander Straith (Birmingham, Michigan) was the runner-up with a score of 545. Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) finished fourth with a score of 507, also a personal best. Tristan Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan) shot a 496 for sixth place. The top Cardinal shooter, Ethan Hilderbrandt (Plattsburgh, New York), finished third with a score of 514.

Coulston-Gerigk led all competitors in air rifle with a score of 553 (out of 600). Straith finished second with a score of 545. Karas shot a 517 for third place. Rounded out the Laker team, Bruizeman shot a 500 for fifth place. The top Cardinal shooter, Hilderbrandt, finished fourth with a score of 516.

The Lakers are coached by Head Coach Cameron Zwart and Assistant Coach Timothy Schmeltzer. The Cardinals are coached by Head Coach Peter Visconti.

The mission of the GVSU Rifle & Pistol Club is to provide all students with the opportunity to participate in shooting sports, with an emphasis in three-position smallbore rifle, international air rifle, and air pistol. Regardless of skill or ability, all members can have a safe and enjoyable time interacting with fellow students and engaging in marksmanship. All equipment is provided, including guns, ammunition, and targets. The club meets Tuesdays from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM and Thursdays 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM during the school year at the Grand Rapids Rifle & Pistol Club (1331 Nagel Ave SW, Wyoming). Practice attendance is not mandatory to be a member of the club; however, regular practice attendance is expected.
