MORGANTOWN, WV – For the first time, the Grand Valley State University Rifle & Pistol Club traveled to West Virginia University to participate in the Walther Cup on November 21^st. The precision air rifle event consisted of 60 shots fired in the standing position. The match was identified as a national ranking competition by USA Shooting. There were four 2020 Tokyo Olympians and a 2016 Rio Olympics gold medalist in the field.

After the match, the team spent several hours exploring Coopers Rock State Forest (Bruceton Mills, WV).

The mission of the GVSU Rifle & Pistol Club is to provide all students with the opportunity to participate in shooting sports, with an emphasis in three-position smallbore rifle, international air rifle, and air pistol. Regardless of skill or ability, all members can have a safe and enjoyable time interacting with fellow students and engaging in marksmanship. All equipment is provided, including guns, ammunition, and targets. The club meets Tuesdays from 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM and Thursdays 5:00 PM – 10:00 PM during the school year at the Grand Rapids Rifle & Pistol Club (1331 Nagel Ave SW, Wyoming). Practice attendance is not mandatory to be a member of the club; however, regular practice attendance is expected.

MOREHEAD, KY – After a one-year pause, the Grand Valley State University Rifle & Pistol Club returned to Morehead State University Rifle to participate in the Eagle Open for the fourth time on November 20^th. The event consisted of matches in both three position smallbore rifle (60 shots fired in the kneeling, prone, and standing positions) and precision air rifle (60 shots fired in the standing position).

In the smallbore, the Lakers were led by Cassie Coulston-Geirgk (Wayne, Michigan). She posted a score of 547-14x (out of 600-60x), was good for 18^th place, and was tops amongst collegiate competitors. Close behind was Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) in 20^th place with a personal best score of 544-14x. Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan) shot a 538-10x for 25^th place. Rounding out the team score was Tristan Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan) with a score of 481-7x in 43^rd place. Together, the four posted a team score of 2110-45x, a season-high.

Coulston-Gerigk continued her strong shooting in air rifle as well. She was the top collegiate with a personal best score of 577-30x (out of 600-60x), good for 12^th place. Straith was 40^th with a score of 549-14x. Karas continues to make a statement in her first year by posting a score of 547-15x for 41^st place. Bruizeman, another first-year shooter, shot a personal best 531-8x for 46^th place. The team score was 2204, another season-high.

Not to be outdone by his peers, John Martin (Holly, Michigan) set a record of his own during the team dinner before the match. Martin consumed 16 habanero chicken wings on his way to earning his place on the “Wall of Flame” at Wings, Etc. Grill & Pub (Fort Wayne, Indiana).

Permanent link for Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference October Recap on November 15, 2021

WYOMING, MICHIGAN – The GVSU Rifle Club began the five-month Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference season in October. The conference is currently composed of 12 teams from the Midwest and East Coast. Member schools include Bowling Green State University, Georgia Military College, Grand Valley State University, Hillsdale College, Liberty University, Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, North Dakota State University, Purdue University, University of Akron, University of Michigan, and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. In the regular season, the schools compete in monthly postal matches in three-position smallbore rifle and precision air rifle. A postal match is a competition in which competitors fire separately on their home ranges and exchange scores. Four predesignated shooters contribute towards the overall team score.

WYOMING, MI – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club participated in a postal match against the State University of New York at Plattsburgh Marksmanship Club in the month of November. A postal match is a competition in which the competitors fire separately on their home range and exchange scores. The teams faced off in three-position smallbore rifle (60 shots fired in the prone, standing, and kneeling positions) and precision air rifle (60 shots fired in the standing position).

In the smallbore team competition, the Lakers defeated the Cardinals by 135 points, 2103 to 1968 (out of 2400). In the air rifle team competition, the Lakers prevailed by 188 points, 2115 to 1927 (out of 2400). The aggregate team scores were calculated by the top four individual scores on each roster. Combined, the Lakers defeated the Cardinals by 323 points.

In the smallbore individual competition, Lakers occupied the top two spots. The top shooter, Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (Wayne, Michigan), posted a score of 555 (out of 600), a personal best. Alexander Straith (Birmingham, Michigan) was the runner-up with a score of 545. Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) finished fourth with a score of 507, also a personal best. Tristan Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan) shot a 496 for sixth place. The top Cardinal shooter, Ethan Hilderbrandt (Plattsburgh, New York), finished third with a score of 514.

Coulston-Gerigk led all competitors in air rifle with a score of 553 (out of 600). Straith finished second with a score of 545. Karas shot a 517 for third place. Rounded out the Laker team, Bruizeman shot a 500 for fifth place. The top Cardinal shooter, Hilderbrandt, finished fourth with a score of 516.

The Lakers are coached by Head Coach Cameron Zwart and Assistant Coach Timothy Schmeltzer. The Cardinals are coached by Head Coach Peter Visconti.

Permanent link for GVSU Club Softball takes the series against FSU 3-0 on November 10, 2021

The GVSU club softball team competed in their last fall season games against Ferris State University this past Sunday (11/7). GVSU went 3-0 in the tripleheader against the bulldogs. The scores were as follows: Game 1 (13-3), Game 2 (11-0), and Game 3 (15-0). Our player of the week was sophomore Emily Fontaine. Fontaine was 6/8 (.750) at the plate with five singles, a triple, and a walk. She played shortstop, third base, and even threw an inning on the mound, including one strikeout. She threw a combined no-hitter with our pitcher of the week freshman Bella Chinavare. Chinavare threw five strikeouts and allowed one walk in only three innings of pitching. GVSU finished their fall season going 11-1 in conference play and 15-3 overall. Currently, GVSU shares the Great Lakes East Conference title with Central Michigan University. GVSU’s first game back is March 27, 2021, with a home tripleheader against CMU for the conference title. Anchor Up!

Permanent link for Rifle & Pistol Participates in Orion Monthly Match on November 5, 2021

WYOMING, MI – The Grand Valley State University Rifle Club participated in three Orion Scoring System Monthly Virtual Matches in October. Orion's Monthly Virtual Matches are a fun way for users to compare scores with other teams and shooters from across the country. The air pistol match consisted of 40 shots at 10 meters, the air rifle competition consisted of 60 shots also at 10 meters, and the smallbore competition consisted of 60 shots fired in prone, standing, and kneeling position at 50 feet.

Five Lakers participated in the air pistol event. Leading the way was John Martin (Holly, Michigan). Martin posted a top stage of 83 (out of 100) on his way to a 319 (out of 400). His score was good for 10^th place overall. Close on Martin’s heels was Tristan Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan). Bruizeman finished in 14^th place with a 310. In the team event, Martin and Bruizeman were joined by Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) to post a 914 (out of 1200), good for fifth place.

Leading the way in the air rifle event was Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan). He posted a score of 586.2 (out of 654), good for third place overall. He was joined by Cassie Coulston-Gerigk (Wayne, Michigan), and John Martin (Holly, Michigan), in posting a team score of 1707.9, good for second place overall.

In smallbore, Straith led the Lakers with a score of 547 (out of 600). The score was good for first place. Coulston-Gergik finished third, with a score of 527. Martin displayed his versality in rounding out the team score with a tally of 501, finishing fourth. Together, they finished first place as a team with 1575 (out of 1800).

Permanent link for Rifle Team Competes In State Championship on October 27, 2021

BRISTOL, INDIANA – Cool temperatures and gusty wind conditions greeted 17 shooters, including two current members of the GVSU Rifle & Pistol Club, who competed in the Indiana State Rifle & Pistol Association’s Prone Conventional Smallbore State Championship at the Chief Wa-Ke'-De on October 16, 2021. The individual match consisted of 160 total shots fired in the prone match at various distances. The Indiana resident with the highest aggregate score is declared the State Champion.

The top Laker shooter was first-year member Tristan Bruizeman (West Olive, Michigan). He posted a score of 1440-20x (out of 1600-160x) for 14^th place. He had a 378-4x on the 50-yard course, 342-0x on the 50-meter course, 365-6x on the Dewar course, and 359-10x on the 100-yard course

Another first year Laker shooter, Joseph Martin (South Bend, Indiana), also participated in the match. He finished in 15^th place with a score of 1406-7x. He was the top Indiana resident in the junior and collegiate class.

Permanent link for GVSU Club Swim at Ohio State University's Fall Invitational on October 20, 2021

After 587 days, Grand Valley State University’s swim club was finally able to compete again. The team traveled to Columbus, Ohio to attend Ohio State University’s Fall Invitational. There were fifteen other collegiate-level swim clubs competing. Of the teams in attendance, the GVSU swim club placed thirteenth with 66.5 points. 40.5 points belonged to the women of the GVSU swim club, putting them in eleventh place, and the remaining 26 points belonged to the men, putting them in twelfth place. Josh David was the high scorer for the men. David swam the 50 butterfly (24.78), 100 individual medley (1:00.24), and the 200 freestyle relay. Anna Cornell was the high scorer not only for the women but for the whole team. Cornell swam the 100 butterfly (1:08.89), 50 backstrokes (35.06), 25 freestyle (13.13), and the 200 medley relay. The team really enjoyed being able to get back in the pool again and put all of their training and hard work to good use. Newcomer Adam After said that for his first-ever college club swim meet, he really enjoyed the car ride to Ohio, the meet, and being able to compete at a Big 10 college. Another newcomer, Josie Kasmauski said it was one of the highlights of her year. GVSU Swim Clubs President Veronica Lidy commented, “For more than a year our team endured shortened practices and time trials instead of away meets, but competing at OSU made it all worth it. Our team had a great time running into friends from other schools, making new inside jokes, swimming at such a high-caliber facility, and above all else finally getting back into the spirit of competition. Swimming is all about perseverance and dedication to see results towards a goal. For the last year and a half we did just that and we got what we were after.” The team looks forward to competing at more meets in the near future.

Permanent link for GVSU Club Softball Sweeps SVSU on October 20, 2021

This past Sunday (10/17) the GVSU club softball traveled across the state to compete against Saginaw State University (SVSU). GVSU dominated in the field and at the plate defeating SVSU in a total of 14 innings. The game scores were as follows: Game 1 (W, 12-0) Game 2 (15-0) Game 3 (14-0). The team’s player of the week was junior Taylor Trudeau. Trudeau went 8-9 (0.888) at the plate including two doubles and a triple, caught for the second game, and even saw some time playing at shortstop. She had an excellent hitting day and each time she was in the box, she did her job. Trudeau scored four runs and had 8 RBIs. The team’s pitcher of the week was freshman Grace Odenbach. Odenbach had two complete shutouts in ten innings, striking out nine and allowing a total of four hits. She allowed zero walks and fielded four outs on the mound herself. The GVSU club team will take the field at home in a couple of weeks (11/7/21) against Ferris State for their final fall game of the semester. Anchor Up!

Permanent link for Rifle & Pistol Club Competes in CMP Monthly Match on October 20, 2021

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – The Grand Valley State University Rifle and Pistol Club sent three members to complete in the CMP Monthly Match at the Gary Anderson CMP Marksmanship Center on October 9^th.

For senior Alexander Straith (West Bloomfield, Michigan) and sophomore Kathryn Karas (Carleton, Michigan) the match consisted of 60 shots fired at 10 meters in the standing position with an air rifle. Straith posted a score of 581.4 (out of 654) en route to finishing 21^st overall. Karas finished 24^th overall with a personal best 566.4.

Junior John Martin (Holly, Michigan) became the first Laker to shoot an air pistol match at Camp Perry. The match was also 60 shots fired at 10 meters. He finished in 14^th with a score of 460-2x (out of 600).
