School of CIS Announces Name Change to M.S. in CIS

We are excited to announce that starting in the Fall 2020 semester the Master’s of Science program in Computer Information Systems (CIS) will be renamed to Applied Computer Science (ACS).

When the MS-CIS program was first created many years ago we chose the term “Computer Information Systems” because it was a generic term that reflected the kinds of practical hands-on computing skills that we deliver, rather than a more research-focused PhD-preparatory Master’s of Computer Science. Since that time “Applied Computer Science” has become an accepted term used by many universities.

The Master’s of Science in Applied Computer Science (MS-ACS) will continue to provide graduate students a broad range of practical computing topics needed for rapid advancement such as cybersecurity, software engineering, machine learning, mobile applications, databases, visualization, web applications, and more. This name change is intended to help encompass the diverse nature of our masters programs for our students.
