Withdrawal Options

Students can withdraw on their own, through their myBanner account or by using the Registration Drop/Add Form. Dropping classes can impact student loans and scholarships and does not guarantee a tuition refund. We recommend talking with the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships (616-331-3234) prior to dropping any classes.

A “W” will appear on the transcript.

Late withdrawal request requires the signature of the instructor, chair of the department and the Director of the Student Academic Success Center, and a letter of support from the instructor or chair. Dropping classes can impact student loans and scholarships and does not guarantee a tuition refund. We recommend talking with the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships (616-331-3234) prior to dropping any classes.

If a student is doing well in the course, has completed at least 80% of course work and needs more time to complete course requirements due to an unforeseen emergency or circumstance, they may get approval from the course professor.

If granted, the student has until the end of the following semester to complete the course work. This means the student has the current semester’s work PLUS their incomplete work to finish. If the student is unable to complete the work, they will receive a failing grade.

A student CANNOT withdraw from a course after taking an Incomplete in it.

Please review the Incomplete grade policy and talk with your Academic Advisor and specific professor to see if this would fit your situation.

Students can completely withdraw from all of their courses for the semester, up until the last day of classes.

Complete withdrawal paperwork can be found on the registrar’s website. Course Withdrawals - Registrar - Grand Valley State University (gvsu.edu).

The student will have “W”s on their transcript.

A student can file for tuition reimbursement, with documentation from their doctor or therapist. This process is not guaranteed. See TRAC information listed below.

The Tuition Refund Appeal process is for when a significant event occurs in a student’s life (such as death of family member, accident, medical emergency, mental health hospitalization) in which that situation majorly impacts the student’s ability to participate and finish classes. The Tuition Refund Appeal is a petition process, not a guarantee, but if you faced a special circumstance and would like to try to appeal, carefully follow the steps listed on the Tuition Refund Appeal website: Tuition Refund Appeal Committee - Registrar - Grand Valley State University (gvsu.edu).
