Research

Dr. Baine's technical research interests include electronic navigation, control systems, and sensor data fusion. He has done work on integrity monitoring of vision-based navigation systems, the re-purposing and control of large-scale lithium-ion battery packs, and the design of a navigation system that utilizes ADS-b signals to navigate in GPS (GNSS) denied environments.

Dr. Baine is currently working on his Tuition Equity Project. This project is actively collecting and analyzing data from public universities to explore the disparate impacts of tuition structures on marginalized communities and seek solutions to address them.

Biography

Nicholas Baine, Ph.D., P.E., joined Grand Valley State University in 2013. At GVSU, Dr. Baine has played a key role in teaching and curriculum development within engineering. He has been actively engaged in both undergraduate and graduate levels, serving as a coordinator for various first-year courses, contributing to the redesign of the first-year sequence in 2019-2020, and mentoring graduate students in navigation and control systems research. His efforts were recognized in 2020 when he received the prestigious Pew Teaching Excellence Award and in 2024 when he received the Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award for his dedication to teaching and mentoring graduate students.

Currently, Dr. Baine is the First-Year Engineering Coordinator at GVSU, where he oversees various aspects of student support and academic enrichment for first-year engineering students. Additionally, he serves as a faculty advisor for several student organizations, including Laker Racing, the Michigan-Lambda Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, and the W8GVU Grand Valley Amateur Radio Council. His dedication to student mentorship and guidance was recognized in 2022 when he received the Jo Ann Litton Outstanding Advisor Award for his exceptional work with student organizations.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Baine has been active for over a decade in the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), where he is often presenting the results of efforts to improve engineering education at GVSU. His leadership roles within the organization have included Director, Conference Chair, Vice-Chair, Chair, and Past Chair within the North Central Section Executive Board.

Dr. Baine's expertise also extends to accreditation and standards, where he serves as a program evaluator for the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) and a subject matter expert for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). In these roles, he works to ensure the quality and compliance of engineering programs and contributes to the development of testing standards for Professional Engineers (PEs).
