Memories from Holocaust survivors to be recreated during performance
Henry Greenspan's play "Remnants" recreates moments from his extensive interviews with multiple Holocaust survivors that have taken place over the past 40 years. The play features scenes based on memories the survivors have of living through the Holocaust and the trauma they've experienced since. Greenspan, a psychologist, oral historian and playwright at the University of Michigan, will bring "Remnants" to Grand Valley on November 8.

GVSU students to team with Grand Rapids Ballet School to perform famous baroque music
The GVSU Opera Theatre will join forces with Grand Valley's Early Music Ensemble and Department of Visual and Media Arts, as well as the Grand Rapids Ballet School Junior Company, to reinvigorate baroque music for modern audiences. Performances of "Masquerade: A Baroque Extravaganza" will take place November 9-11.

Martian-themed event planned to celebrate Fall Arts Celebration Mars exhibit
The Grand Valley Art Gallery will experience a Martian invasion during an upcoming event that will celebrate the university's Fall Arts Celebration Mars-themed art exhibit. The Martian Party event will take place on October 31 on the Allendale Campus. The "Mars: Astronomy and Culture" exhibit brings together more than 40 photographs, drawings, movie posters, book covers and video projections spotlighting Mars.

Outreach event teaches local students benefits of sustainable energy
More than 70 middle school students from Kent, Ottawa and Muskegon counties learned about the impact of energy use and its effect on the environment, during an interactive outreach event October 20 at Grand Valley. During Energizing Our World Saturday, students participated in various sessions led by Grand Valley faculty members and engaged in hands-on activities to learn about solar, wind and hydro power.

Grand Valley students, staff member win Grand Awards for roles in local theater productions
The annual Grand Awards celebrates Grand Rapids area college and community theater performers and productions, and multiple members of the Grand Valley community won awards during this year's ceremony. Overall, Grand Valley students, alumni, staff and productions were nominated in 10 categories.

Faculty, staff will repair students' belongings during free event
During the day-to-day busyness of classes and activities on campus, it is not uncommon for students to rip their clothes, misplace a few buttons, or break their eyeglasses, a zipper or a backpack strap. An upcoming Repair Clinic will offer students an opportunity to have all of the above scenarios and more mended by Grand Valley faculty and staff members. The free event will take place October 24 on the Allendale Campus.

Student cohort strengthens interfaith conversations on college campuses
A collaborative internship program between five local colleges, including Grand Valley, is providing students with opportunities to develop their interfaith leadership skills and generate interfaith conversations on their own campuses. The cohort was established in 2015 after the Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. The participating schools currently include Grand Valley, Hope College, Calvin College, Aquinas College and Kuyper College.

Symposium to explore access to open educational resources
An upcoming event will celebrate Grand Valley faculty and staff members who strive to develop free and open educational resources for students, and how they incorporate those resources into their classrooms. Grand Valley professor inducted into prestigious public relations organization
The Public Relations Society of America recently inducted new members into its prestigious College of Fellows, one of which was a Grand Valley faculty member. Along with 10 other professionals, Tim Penning, professor of advertising and public relations, was inducted into the organization during a special ceremony on October 6 at the PRSA International Conference in Austin, Texas.

Award-winning poets to discuss their work, inspirations during Fall Arts Celebration
Two unique poetic voices will share their work and discuss their inspirations with the West Michigan community during Fall Arts Celebration at Grand Valley State University. "An Evening of Poetry and Conversation with Ada Limón and Carl Phillips" will take place October 18 on the Pew Grand Rapids Campus. A reception and book signing will take place after both authors read samples from their work.
