Course Permits and Contracts

Course permits

To receive the following History permits: registration permit (SST 495), internship permit (HST 490), senior Thesis (HST 498), independent study (HST 399), you will need to submit a registration override request in Banner.

  1. Log into your Banner account.
  2. Click on Student and then click Registration.
  3. Select Registration Override Term and choose the correct term you plan to take the course. 
  4. Click on Registration Override Request Form. On this form you will need to select the course number (HST 490 01, for example). Select a reason from the drop down and add as much information to the request as possible in the Comments/Explanation box. Complete information helps to assure quick turnaround. 

NOTE: Those seeking HST 399: Independent Study, HST 498: Senior Thesis, and HST 490: Internship should submit the name of the faculty member with whom they are working.

NOTE: For SST 495, you must have completed SST 309 or SST 310.

The History Department will issue a permit within 2 business days. You will receive an email from Banner to your official student email address notifying you whether the permit has been approved. Please register as soon as you receive notification that you have the necessary permit as permit approvals are only valid for three weeks. If you have any questions about permits, please contact Dr. Shapiro-Shapin.

Contracts

Contracts are required for HST 399: Independent Study and for HST 498: Senior Thesis.

Please sit down with your project advisor and fill out the online form together. If you prefer, select the PDF of the form and print, fill out neatly, and turn into the History Department office staff.

HST 399 Independent Study Contract

Independed Study Parameters:

An independent study offers students the opportunity to pursue the study of history on a topic of their choosing. Independent studies vary widely upon the choice of topic, the parameters for reading and/or research agreed upon with the project advisor, and the number of credits requested.

1. Definition of the Project: Students will identify a historical problem for study and decide upon a course of reading, research, or other project goals with the advisor.
2. Scope: Research should include primary and/or secondary sources as appropriate to the project. A 3-credit independent study should have work commensurate with the workload involved in a regular 3-credit class.
3. Historical context: Students will explore the topic discussed in its proper historical context.
4. Historiography: For research projects, students will situate their interpretations into the proper historiographical context.
5. Timeline: Students will work out with their advisor a timeline for advisor meetings, and reading and/or written work required, and a final due date and submit this form to the History Department. Students are expected to meet regularly with the project advisor over the course of the term.
6. Documentation: Proper citations and bibliography in Chicago Manual of Style format.
7. Advisor: Students are expected to work closely with a faculty advisor. Faculty sign off must be present before one can be granted a registration permit for the course.

HST 498 Senior Thesis Contract

Senior Thesis Parameters:

The senior thesis is a substantial, original research project that is the foundation for a graduate school writing sample or similar career endeavor.

1. Thesis: Students will identify a historical problem and offer an argument/thesis that addresses that problem. The thesis should contain an original interpretation of the topic.
2. Sources: Substantial research using primary and secondary sources as appropriate to the project.
3. Historical Context: Topic is discussed in its proper historical context.
4. Historiography: Students will situate their interpretations into the proper historiographical context.
5. Timeline: Students will work out with their advisor a timeline for advisor meetings, an annotated bibliography, an outline, several drafts, and a final due date and submit this form to the History Department. Students are expected to meet regularly with the thesis advisor over the course of the term.
6. Documentation: Proper citations and bibliography in Chicago Manual of Style format.
7. Advisor: Students are expected to work closely with a faculty advisor. Faculty sign off must be present before one can be granted a registration permit for the course.
8. Page length: 20+ pages, exclusive of citations, illustrations, figures and bibliography.
