Admission Guidelines

The Frederik Meijer Honors College employs a holistic application process, which means that we consider the whole student, not just static indicators. In our application, we look for demonstrations of strong academic motivation and ability to achieve on a high level. The application asks you to show these through sharing your leadership experiences, completing a self-assessment, and submitting a substantial paper from high school. We also look at high school transcripts and standardized test scores, if supplied. We welcome applications from all students who believe they belong in Honors. If you think the Honors College is the right place for you, please apply!

The Honors College also welcomes applications from students transferring from another college or university or from within GVSU. Our normal expectation is that transfer students will have a 3.5 college GPA.

All prospective students should review the Self Assessment for Prospective Students for characteristics of students in the Frederik Meijer Honors College. If these characteristics describe you, please apply. If you've already been accepted by Grand Valley and want to apply to the Meijer Honors College, Complete the online application here.

Deadlines. While there is no official deadline to apply for the Honors College, we recommend that you apply as soon as you are accepted to GVSU. Here are three possible "deadlines" to consider:

  • March 1: Students wishing to be considered for merit scholarships must apply to GVSU by March 1. These students may be eligible for additional Honors-specific scholarships if they have also been accepted into Honors.
  • April 1:  In early April, we begin sending students information about registering for fall Honors courses. Course placements are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • May 1: The GVSU Housing office begins making housing assignments on this date, and only those already accepted into Honors are eligible for Honors housing.

We recommend applying as early as possible!
