Sequence Spotlights
Owen Kirkpatrick
Can you talk about an assignment or project that was completed that you enjoyed doing?
I enjoyed having to write a paper about a broad topic, mine being happiness. This paper challenged my critical thinking and technical writing skills to the max. I have become a much better writer because of having to tackle topics like this while using proper structuring and writing techniques. I enjoyed having to be creative and expressive while still fitting into a proper style. One of the most enjoyable parts was getting some of the best feedback I have ever received back from the professor who graded it.
How has this class helped you in your other classes/future career?
The Sound of Ethics has helped me become a much better listener and overall communicator. Firstly, this class has opened my eyes to just how valuable listening is and the role it plays in communication. It has also equipped me with techniques and methods to make my listening skills as good as they can be. Even right now, I can use the things I have learned to improve my communication in my relationships and classes. I don’t doubt that in my future classes and career, I will be able to make great use of these skills.
What is your biggest takeaway from your sequence?
My biggest takeaway from The Sound of Ethics is that it is worth it to take the time to listen to what others have to say. When someone lets go of their biases, places their full attention on an individual, and truly listens to what they have to say, true communication can be achieved. So many people have very interesting and valuable perspectives and opinions which can only be understood through effective listening. I will never forget the lessons I have learned about how to be a good listener and I anticipate that they will do great things for me in the future.
