Established in memory of GVSU HTM Professor, Ben Mutnick, to recognize an HTM student who, like Professor Mutnick, has persevered through and/or overcome challenging or adverse conditions in their own lives while, at the same time, achieving success in the HTM Program.  Each award recipient will demonstrate a sincere motivation to succeed, despite such trials and tribulations.  Student should note that this award is not limited solely to those individuals who may have overcome severe illness, but is available to those students who endured any significant obstacle with an optimistic aspiration to succeed, despite all odds.

ELIGIBILITY: 

  • Declared major in Hospitality and Tourism Management
  • Must be a full-time (12 credits) undergraduate student during the academic year
  • Making satisfactory academic progress according to the norms established by the University (min. 2.0 GPA)
  • Note: Previous recipients of the Benjamin Mutnick Mettle Award are not eligible to apply.

Despite being diagnosed with stage IV cancer, Professor Mutnick maintained an extraordinary dedication to his students and to GVSU. Though he lost his battle with cancer, he leaves behind an unbridled spirit which would not be defeated by a tragic illness that touches so many of our lives, and the lives of our friends and loved ones.

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist HTM students with the cost of their study abroad program.

  • Must be an undergraduate student enrolled for three credits hours or more with a declared major in HTM.
  • Must be accepted to participate in an HTM field study course with an international component and/or a HTM faculty-led study abroad program
  • Must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress standards

The HTM Club, in conjunction with the HTM Department, is providing this scholarship to a registered club member who has demonstrated an active interest in the club’s success and development.

ELIGIBILITY: 

  • Recipients will have been accepted for or are currently enrolled at GVSU
  • Must be an undergraduate student, currently enrolled full-time (at least 12 credits/semester) with junior or senior status during the Fall and Winter semesters
  • Must have declared a major in Hospitality and Tourism Management and be making satisfactory academic progress (2.0 GPA or higher)
  • Must be an “active” member of the HTM Clubs listed above. Active members are those who demonstrate their commitment by regular attendance at meetings, activities/events, promotion of membership and other activities deemed appropriate by the committee

To be eligible for the HTM Clubs Scholarship, students must be an active member of one or more of our HTM clubs by participating in club activities, like going on a walking tour of ArtPrize in downtown Grand Rapids (pictured above), for example.

Established to assist students who are pursuing an unpaid internship to gain experience in the hospitality and tourism industry.  It will assist a student who may not otherwise have the opportunity to accept an unpaid internship program in the HTM field.

ELIGIBILITY: 

  • Declared major in Hospitality and Tourism Management
  • Enrolled in an internship course (HTM 290, 390, or 490)Please Note: You should have already completed or be currently working on an unpaid internship at the time you apply.
  • Must be a full-time (12 credits) undergraduate student during the academic year
  • Making satisfactory academic progress according to the norms established by the University (min. 2.0 GPA)
  • Must demonstrate financial need by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

To assist students with the cost of their education, increase awareness of careers in hospitality and tourism management, and promote diversity in the field. Recipients for this scholarship should:

  • Be accepted for or currently enrolled at Grand Valley State University (GVSU)
  • Must be an undergraduate enrolled for 12 credit hours or more in any course of study with priority given to students majoring in Hospitality and Tourism Management
  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater and meet satisfactory academic progress standards.
  • Candidates must represent a minority status. Multiracial candidates may also qualify for this scholarship
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are the first in their family to earn a four-year degree (First Generation)

Financial need is required and must be demonstrated by the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Renewal Criteria: This scholarship may be renewed with reapplication provided the recipient continues to meet the qualifications stated above.

Established in 2016 by the Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association (MLTA) in honor of Richard A. “Rick” Winn. Rick, president of Amway Hotel Corporation (AHC), is a driving force behind its trio of Grand Rapids hotels. In his current role, Winn oversees the operations for the Amway Grand Plaza, JW Marriott Grand Rapids, and Downtown Courtyard by Marriott Grand Rapids.
