HPE Scoop
Nature Literacy and Crafting
Nature literacy was a central focus of Dr. Johnson's HPE 260 course, "Teaching Methods of Outdoor Pursuits." Throughout the semester, students immersed themselves in discussions exploring the significance of nature literacy within the context of HPE curriculum and programs. An innovative approach to understanding this concept was through hands-on crafting sessions, where students eagerly fashioned various items such as nature journals, acorn mushrooms, rock art, nature emotion notecards, acorn-marble pendants, rain sticks, and glitter calming jars. These endeavors provided connections to the natural world, sparking further dialogue on the role of nature in education and the myriad benefits it offers students. We brainstormed strategies for seamlessly integrating such activities into both HPE and broader school-wide nature-inspired initiatives. Undoubtedly, these experiences stood out as a highlight of the semester, fostering a deeper appreciation for the wonders of the natural world among all participants.
