Jordan Wiseman '13
I fell into the OSH program on accident, but have zero regrets about switching into the program full time and graduating with an OSH degree. I graduated from the program in 2013 and the program did a great job of covering the basics in what is needed to pursue a career in safety. As part of the program, we were required to complete an internship which most of my friend's programs didn't do. This allowed me to get great hands on experience in helping to run a safety department of a real company, and upon graduating my first real job as a safety professional. The GV OSH program sets new graduates up for success right out of the gate, back then it wasn't very common to graduate with a fulltime job lined up in the field you studied.
I started my career out in manufacturing being the on site safety manager for these businesses. This allowed me to grow my book knowledge into actual on the job experience and knowledge. What I found for myself personally, was being an on site safety professional left me a little underwhelmed, and that is what lead me to the role that I have been in for the last 8 years - Loss Prevention Consultant in Workers Comp Insurance. This career allows me to work with 50+ accounts across all types of businesses and locations. It is my job to work with the clients to create safer working environments so the business can 1) protect their people because it is the right thing to do and 2) lower their associated costs with their workers comp program. I get to see new businesses, buildings, and people every day and this keeps me on my toes! I truly believe that nobody's job is important enough to not go home to their families at night and this job allows me to spread that message every day. I enjoy going to work and getting to know that I am making a difference and helping to keep people safe at work.
I consider myself lucky to have found Grand Valley's OSH program and to have met professors like Doctor Huizen who were there every step of the way both inside the classroom and out. I have the career and life I do today because of the Grand Valley OSH program.
