The Water in the West Program (WIWP), offered for the first time in spring 2023, provides an immersive and effective way to expand both the knowledge and worldview of students through experiential learning. In May and June 2023, we drove over 6,300 miles and traversed 12 states. We also collected and analyzed 21 water samples from four different states. The team of 26 participants (3 TAs, 2 faculty, and 21 participants) from a diversity of majors learned about a variety of water-related topics including acid mine drainage, river discharge, water quality, dams, landscape weathering, and erosion. We hiked, kayaked, explored, and shared through book clubs to learn about water in the west. In WIWP student essays and feedback, students described the impact of the WIWP as transformational, in terms of knowledge, problem-solving skills, self-discovery, collaboration, and friendships. Many mentioned that they would be forever changed by the experience.
