What is a Minor?

In college, you can think of a major as your main area of study, like the big subject you're most interested in. It's the main focus of your degree, and it usually requires you to take specific classes related to that subject.

A college minor is like a smaller, secondary area of interest. It's a way for you to explore and study something else that you're curious about, in addition to your major. Minors typically require fewer classes than majors, so they give you a taste of another subject without going as deep as your major.

Here's why it's important to carefully consider what minor to choose:

  1. Interest and Passion: Your minor should be something you genuinely enjoy. It's a chance to explore a topic you're passionate about but may not want to make your main focus. Picking a minor you love can make your college experience more enjoyable.

  2. Career Goals: Think about how your minor could complement your major in terms of your future career. Sometimes, a well-chosen minor can make you more attractive to employers because it shows you have a range of skills and interests.

  3. Diversity of Knowledge: A minor can help you become a more well-rounded person. For example, if you're majoring in computer science but have a minor in psychology, you might understand how people interact with technology better, which can be super useful.

  4. Flexibility: Minors can provide flexibility in your college journey. They allow you to try out different subjects without committing to a full major change. It's like dipping your toes in the water of another field.

Remember, you don't have to have a minor; it's totally optional. It's a personal choice, and you should pick one that feels right for you and aligns with your interests and future goals. So, take your time, do some research, and think about what excites you the most. Your college experience is all about learning and growing, so make sure your minor adds to that experience in a meaningful way.
