Student Outcomes
Assessment of Student Outcomes
Outcome M LIB-LEAD-A.1: Competency 1 - Identity and Values
Liberal Studies student learning outcome one—requiring students engage
in perspective-taking that explicates and connects their experiences
with their learning in the program—clearly aligns with Leadership
Emphasis Competency One, requiring students demonstrate integrity
between their identity and values.
Objective 17
LIB-Lead -- Students will engage in perspective-taking the explicates
and connects their applied, professional experiences with learning in
the classroom.
Measure 1
2019 Status
Not Yet Achieved
The Assessment Committee’ assessment of Objectives M.17 and N.18 were
limited only to the program’s capstone course (LIB 495) in 2019. As
curricular revisions continue through Winter 2020 in response to new
GVSU Presidential initiatives, the Assessment Committee will continue to
work with the department to revise the Leadership Emphasis assessment
plan and reporting to ensure student learning continues to meet or
exceed targets.
2017 Status
Achieved
Nearly all students are scoring at or above target for these
competencies/learning objectives.

Measure 3
2019 Status
Achieved
A subset of integrative statements (n=5) and senior projects (n=4) were
collected from the 20 students in the Winter 2019 LIB 495 (Senior
Seminar) that is a part of the Accelerated Leadership Program. Those
findings exceeded target.
2017 Status
Not Yet Achieved
All students are meeting our established target for experience,
demonstrating mastery of one measure of this identified
competency/learning objective for Leadership Emphasis students. Just
more than half of students are mastering their understanding of
"influence of context and assumptions" by the time they
complete their capstone/senior seminar. This finding will inform our
curricular/pedagogical approaches going forward, emphasizing strategies
to increase mastery in this area.
Outcome N LIB-LEAD-B.1: Competency 1 - Identity and Values
Liberal Studies student learning outcome two—requiring students
integrate knowledge—aligns with Leadership Emphasis Competency One,
requiring students demonstrate integrity between their identity and
values. Moving towards integrity between one’s values and sense of self
inherently requires the integration between different modes of thinking.
Objective 18
LIB-Lead -- Students will demonstrate their ability to move with
integrity between one's values and sense of self, integrating knowledge
and modes of thinking drawn from two or more disciplines.

2017 Status
Achieved
Student assessment values were significantly above the target in areas
of reflection and self-assessment and integrative communication.
Revisions to our assessment rubric (including combining what had been
separate categories for integrated communication and connections to
discipline) for 2018 will help us to better align evaluation with this
leadership competency/objective.

self-assessment with a majority also meeting target for integrative
communication. Revisions to our assessment rubric (including combining

evaluation with this leadership competency/objective.
Outcome O LIB-LEAD-C.1: Competency 5 - Problem-solving skills
Liberal Studies SLO three—asking students produce an interdisciplinary
understanding of a complex problem or question—requires they enhance
their problem-solving skills, meeting the core skills identified in
Leadership Emphasis Competency Five since they must critically analyze a
range of fields, consider areas of alignment and divergence, and arrive
at an interdisciplinary understanding of the issue.
Objective 20
LIB-Lead -- Students will apply content learned in the course of study
to real-world problems and questions.
Measure 1
2019 Status
Not Yet Achieved
A subset of integrative statements (n=5) and senior projects (n=4) were
collected from the 20 students in the Winter 2019 LIB 495 (Senior
Seminar) that is a part of the Accelerated Leadership Program. Those
findings met baseline but fell just short of target in two of the
identified categories and far exceeded baseline in the area of
conclusions/interdisciplinary connections.
2017 Status
Not Yet Achieved
A majority of students are meeting target goals for critical and
creative decision-making. We are looking to strategies to strengthen
teaching of these skills, however, with the goal of achieving 100%
mastery for all students.
Outcome P LIB-LEAD-D.1: Competency 4 - Critical and Creative Decision Making
Liberal Studies SLO four requires students apply content learned in
their course of study to real-world problems and questions. The
application of their knowledge to these problems and questions requires
they demonstrative critical and creative decision making (Leadership
Emphasis Competency Four).
Objective 19
LIB-Lead -- Students will engage in critical and creative
decision-making, analyzing a range of fields, considering areas of
alignment and divergence, and arriving at an interdisciplinary
understanding of an issue.

and generating a plan of action.
2017 Status

A majority of students are meeting the target for connection to
experience. The department is currently designing a rubric to assess the
additional metrics. This will enhance our pedagogical strategies and
support student learning in all three areas identified as part of this assessment.
