Measure 1

2018 Status
Achieved
We have made significant gains in fostering students’ ability to craft an historical thesis. We have done this by introducing Writing Tutor peer-led class sessions, online introduced grammar quizzes, and introduced faculty-developed online tutorials on crafting a thesis. In addition, the time devoted discussion of best practices in the classroom has been expanded. In S/S 2018, 83.81% of students were above the benchmark of proficiency in thesis writing; for the Fall of 2018, that figure was 87.66%. By comparison, the figure for 2016 was 68.42% at proficient or highly proficient.

2018 Status
Achieved
We have made significant gains in fostering students’ ability to develop the historical context in their writing. In the S/S of 2018, 80.96% achieved the benchmark of proficient by the end of the term and in the Fall of 2018, 95.84% achieved the benchmark level of proficient. In 2016, c73% were above the benchmark of proficient. Consistent attention to chronology and the addition of timelines to PowerPoint slides has led to some improvement on this measure now defined as “historical context” more broadly.
