Assessment of Student Outcomes

Outcome ES-B Critical Thinking

Students know the physiological basis of the acute and chronic changes associated with exercise.
Objective 1 Students can describe and identify the acute changes in metabolic, cardiovascular and neuromuscular systems as a result of aerobic, anaerobic and resistance training.

Measure 1

2017 Status
Not Yet Achieved
These findings are similar to past cycle of assessment. The questions for this assessment were taken from questions used on the American College of Sports Medicine certification exam (Exercise Physiologist). The exam has a pass rate of around 50%. These results show that our student retain only average amounts of information in relation to passing the certification exam and fall short of target (80%). There is only slight distinction between CES and HFI students retention (4%) despite the CES students having much greater preparation in anatomy, physiology, and chemistry. It is encouraging to note that scores did not diminish over the 2 year span between MOV 304 and MOV 495, showing that retention scores did not drop over time. However, the breadth of content knowledge on this measure did not improve.

Measure 2

2020 Status
Not Yet Achieved
Students scored 52% on this measure, which was far below the target but still an improvement over 2017 data. This suggests that students may still not be learning the material to the level that we would like, but also suggests that we may be setting the target at an unreasonable level.

2017 Status
Not Yet Achieved
The scope of this measure is somewhat limited to exercise testing. Responses to exercise testing involves greater critical thinking regarding the changes of multiple variables during exercise testing. These results are similar to past reporting cycle. Furthermore, scores are similar to pass rates on the certification exam (46%). CES students score noticeably higher than HFI students (10%).

Objective 6 Students can describe the chronic adaptations that occur in the cardiovascular, metabolic and neuromuscular systems as a result of exercise conditioning.

Measure 1

2017 Status
Not Yet Achieved
The scores are slightly lower than last reporting cycle, but are above averages seen on certification exam pass rates. These scores are also below our target score.

Measure 2

2020 Status
Not Yet Achieved
Progress is being made with 64% but we are still short of the goal.

2018 Status
Not Yet Achieved
We are in process of creating/submitting a New Curriculum package and our Assessment will change to match the new direction. Therefore we did not assess this during the current cycle.

Outcome ES-D Information Literacy

Students can identify anatomical structures, movement terminology, and muscle function concepts when analyzing human movement.
Objective 1 Students can identify appropriate movement terminology, origins/insertions, and skeletal articulations related to human movement.

Measure 1

2021 Status
Not Yet Achieved
Students were asked 5 questions on a standardized post-assessment: Q1 = 61.1% Q2 = 63.9% Q3 = 59.7% Q4 = 88.9% Q5 = 58.3% Ave (n = 72) = 66.4%

2017 Status
Not Yet Achieved
Students improved slightly in their ability to retain knowledge of origins and insertions of major muscles.

Measure 2

2021 Status
Not Yet Achieved
Q1 = 68.1% Q2 = 91.7% Q3 = 93.1% Q4 = 62.5% Q5 = 86.1% Q6 = 69.4% Q7 = 33.3% Q8 = 19.4% Q9 = 66.7% Q10 = 84.7% Q11 = 47.2% Q12 = 73.6% Ave (n = 72) = 64.4

2018 Status
Achieved
These were an improvement from last reporting period, meeting threshold.

Objective 2 Students can analyze and assess the dynamics of human movement.

Measure 1

2021 Status
Not Yet Achieved
Students were asked 5 questions on a standardized post-assessment: Q1 = 44.4% Q2 = 69.4% Q3 = 75% Q4 = 75% Q5 = 57% Ave (n = 72) = 64.1%

2017 Status
Not Yet Achieved
These are an improvement since last reporting period, but still slightly below the threshold. The results show that, in general, students have an idea of the actions that major muscles of the body produce.

Measure 2

2021 Status
Achieved
Students were asked 5 questions on a standardized post-assessment: Q1 = 34.7% Q2 = 95.8% Q3 = 79.2% Q4 = 90.3% Q5 = 91.7% Ave (n=72) = 78.3%

2017 Status
Achieved
These are an improvement from past report, and overall show that students do understand the type of contraction that occurs during various human movement.

Outcome ES-E Integration

Students can assess the health and fitness of individuals and provide appropriate exercise prescriptions.
Objective 3 Students can design appropriate individualized exercise prescriptions based on key rest and exercise data.
