Hiring Process


All applicants must satisfy and conform with the following standards:
• Must be a citizen of the United States.
• Must have an Associates Degree and/or equivalent experience. 
• Must be currently licensed or licensable as a police officer as defined by the Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) at the time of hire.
• Must have a valid Michigan driver’s license without restrictions at the time of hire.
• Must possess satisfactory physical and mental condition determined by the GVSU physician of choice.
• Must pass oral interview and background investigation.

Monitor MCOLES Job Listings and/or GVSU Jobs. When a position is open, fill out and submit the application. A GVSU Police Department representative will contact you.

Interviews take place for those applicants who’ve been chosen to move on in the hiring process. Interview times and locations will be communicated to you. The interview should take approximately 60 minutes to complete. Once completed, await to hear from us regarding your status in the hiring process.

A thorough background investigation will be conducted for applicants who’ve been chosen to move on through the hiring process. A background investigator will be assigned to you for the duration of your background investigation. A background investigation can take 2-4 weeks. It is important that the applicant is readily available and responsive throughout this process to expedite the background investigation process.

  • Must successfully complete a psychological exam, physical exam to include eye and hearing tests, and drug screen. These tests will be paid for by the GVSU Police Department. 
  • Upon completion of a successful background investigation, psychological and physical exams, a review will be conducted with the Chief of Police. The department will work with University Human Resources to extend a conditional offer of employment. The applicant will be given instructions and a timeline to begin a career with the Grand Valley State University Department of Public Safety.
