Home football games are mandatory overtime events. There are plenty of opportunities to work other overtime events on a voluntary basis throughout the year.
All officers are eligible for overtime pay at the rate of 1 1/2 times their base rates for hours worked in excess of their scheduled shift or 40 hours per week.
Public Safety staff who work overtime may also choose to receive compensatory time off which equals the actual number of hours worked times 1 1/2.
Full-time employees will have the first 160 working hours of any disability fully paid. Eligibility will be restored for any disability after the employee has returned to work for 40 hours.
Probationary employees are eligible for 40 hours of salary continuation during their probationary period.
See GVSU Public Safety Staff contract for guidelines on use of salary continuation.
Wellness is an important value at GVSU and GVPD. GVSU Policy allows employees to utilize up to two 30 minute periods a week to freshen up from, or in preparation for, a fitness class or individual workout, with approval from a supervisor. Two additional 30 minute periods may be permitted depending on schedules and workloads. See GVSU SLT Policy 4.2 for additional details.
With a supervisor's approval, Public Safety staff may enroll in Grand Valley State University tuition free. Eligible fees will also be paid by the University.
Spouses, household members and eligible dependents of employees are eligible for a 50% reduction in tuition and eligible fees for Grand Valley State University courses.
Regular, full-time and regular part-time employees accrue 0.077 hours of vacation time for each hour worked (maximum 40 hours per week). The number of hours earned in a single year may not exceed 160 hours. Unused vacation time may be carried over into the next calendar year up to 200 hours.
Probationary employees will earn vacation allowance at the same rate, but are not eligible to use vacation until after 6 months of employment.
Nine paid holidays per year (University Holiday Schedule) as well as 3 floating personal holidays.
If a police officer works on an approved holiday, in addition to their holiday pay, they will be compensated at the rate of 2 times their regular hourly rate for all hours worked on the holiday.
The University provides paid time off for birth parents and non-birth parents to support the physical recovery of childbirth and provide bonding time with children new to the family.
- The Parental Leave policy runs concurrently with FMLA leave and provides up to 6 weeks of paid leave. Parental leave must be taken within the first 12 months after birth, adoption or placement of a child for foster care.
- Birth parents are eligible for up to 6-8 weeks of paid medical leave for physical recovery immediately following childbirth.
- All parents, including birth parents, are eligible for up to 6 weeks of paid time off to bond with a newborn, newly adopted, or newly fostered child. This applies to all GVSU employees who are eligible for salary continuation/short term disability and who hold parental relationships including birth, foster, adoption and non-birth parent. For birth parents, paid time off for bonding is to immediately follow medical leave for childbirth.
