Storm Drain Marking

Marked Storm Drain, Dickenson Elementary project

Would a storm drain marking benefit your community?

What is it?

Storm drains can be marked with stencils to educate the public about the direct connection between storm drains and surface waters. This project could be paired with distributing door hangers or other informational materials in residential areas to draw attention to the stenciled drains.

How much would it cost?

$10 for paint; $100 or more for door hangers (depending on quantity)

What long-term maintenance is required?

Periodic remarking as paint wears off

Who are some potential partners?

  • City / county storm sewer operator
  • Department of public works / right-of-way owner to obtain permission to work in the area
  • Local watershed organization for stencil loan (in Grand Rapids, this is the Lower Grand River Organization of Watersheds)

How could I determine if the project is successful?

  • Count the number of basins stenciled
  • Count the number of door hangers distributed

Where can I find more information?

  • Contact city or county officials prior to marking on public infrastructure (or private property owner).
  • Coordinate with local organizations to identify and mark high-priority (highly visible) drains.
  • Contact local organizations to find out what markings to use.
