The Grand Valley logo system includes our primary logos, the university seal, Athletics logos, and anniversary text treatments. Each logo type is used in different ways and for different purposes. This site will help you use our logos properly.
 

Who may use a Grand Valley logo?

In order to protect the integrity of our registered trademarks, we categorize our permissions based on the user's role and intent. Don't fall into one of the categories listed? Contact us for clarification.

Faculty and staff members may use a Grand Valley logo for university-related projects. Usage is subject to the standards on this site.

Students and alumni are not allowed use a Grand Valley logo for individual/personal projects. This includes (but is not limited to) class projects, websites, resumés, conference and presentation materials, or personal promotions.

 

Once approved by University Marketing, a registered student organization may use a Grand Valley logo. Usage is subject to the standards outlined on this site.

Vendors are allowed to use a Grand Valley logo if they are registered with Affinity Licensing. Usage is subject to the rules outlined on this site.

Licensing

If you are applying any logos, type treatments, or verbiage registered for trademark by Grand Valley State University to items that will be commercially printed or resold, your vendor must be licensed through Affinity Licensing.

Primary Logo

The Primary Grand Valley Logo is uniquely drawn and is the main logo for the university. Treat the logo as artwork, not as typography or a font. It should not be modified or recreated in any way.

The color options for our logos are GVSU blueblack2-color (blue/black), or reversed out in white. Do not change the logo's color. 

Use the version that provides the strongest contrast against its background. Use the GVSU blue, 2-color, or black version on lighter backgrounds and the reversed option on darker backgrounds for maximum legibility.

Tip: If printing in black and white (grayscale), use the black version.

University Seal

The official presidential seal lends formality to communications on which it appears. It is used on very limited occasions and only by permission of the Office of the President.

Do not use the seal on any university communications without acquiring explicit permission from the Office of the President first.

Athletics Logo

The Athletics Department regulates permissions and usage of all athletics logos and follows these guidelines:

  • Athletics marks are reserved for athletics use only.
  • Academic and administrative units cannot use athletic logos.
  • Athletics logos should not be used for alumni purposes except in cases concerning student athletes.
  • Athletics logos are allowed for spirit items.

 

Use of all university marks (academic and athletic) is overseen by University Marketing and questions should be sent to identity@gvsu.edu. Requests to use the athletics marks in accordance with the guidelines above should be directed to the Athletics Marketing and Promotions team.

Anniversary Text Treatments

Colleges, schools, institutes, centers and other select units may request a special anniversary text treatment to be used during the anniversary year. Text treatments follow an established format and are created and provided by University Marketing.

The university logo or a combination logo must also appear on any piece using the anniversary text treatment. Creating your own anniversary logo or text treatment is prohibited.
