Sustainability at its Best with Student Involvement Helping to Make an Impact

The GVSU Beekeepers began at the Holland campus in 2011 under the leadership of Dr. Anne Marie Fauvel.  Today, the apiary is located at the Sustainable Agriculture Project on the south side of the Allendale campus.  There are two beekeeping courses, a spring course led by Dr. Todd Aschenbach and a fall course led by Dr. Anthony Meyer. Students in those classes and in the Beekeepers Club tend to the bees, help ensure their health and harvest their honey.  Students in the Beekeepers Club sell honey and chapstick at pop-up markets throughout the year, and honey can also be found at the SAP Farm Stand on Wednesdays June-October by the clocktower.  The funds collected from honey sales go toward caring for the hives.  Students in the Beekeepers Club, advised by Dr. Yumiko Jakobcic, also do activities throughout the year to raise awareness and education about honeybees examining bee specimens under a microscope, making seed balls to plant near the hives, and hosting guest speakers.  They also do fun community-building activities like crafting and hammocking.  If you are interested in learning more, please contact Yumi Jakobcic at [email protected] or follow the Beekeepers Club on Instagram @beekeepersgvsu for updates on the bees and upcoming events.
