First Aid, CPR, & AED Training
Our First Aid, CPR, and AED Trainings are:
- Hands-on training covering lifesaving skills.
- Intended for individuals to use in the workplace and schools
- Classes that meet OSHA Guidelines for First Aid Programs
- Basic courses and do not meet any type of advanced or professional rescuer type of credentialing.
- Classes that combine lecture with interactive video demonstrations featuring emergency scenarios that are likely to occur in a variety of environments.

WHAT IS CPR?
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) consists of chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth respiration. CPR enables oxygenated blood to circulate to vital organs such as the brain and heart.
- Adult CPR: Participants learn how to perform CPR and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults.
- Adult and Pediatric CPR: Participants learn how to perform CPR and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults and in children over the age of 1, as well as infants under the age of 1.
WHAT IS FIRST AID AND AED?
First Aid: Participants learn to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies, such as burns, cuts and scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck and back injuries, and heat and cold emergencies.
AED: Participants learn how to use automatic external defibrillators.
Classes Offered
All of our classes are blended learning, meaning there is an online portion that will be completed by the participant at their own pace prior to an in-person skills portion. Participants are required to complete the online portion and the in-person skills portion to receive a certification.
Adult & Pediatric First Aid, CPR & AED
This blended course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children and infants and meets OSHA/workplace requirements. Allow approximately 4 hours to complete the online portion. In person skill session takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Adult First Aid, CPR & AED
This course will prepare you to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults and meets OSHA/workplace requirements. Allow 3 hours and 15min to complete the online portion. In person skill session takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Cost: $95
Please read through the course descriptions carefully to ensure you are selecting the course that best meets your needs. Certification is awarded through the American Red Cross and is valid for 2 years.

Requesting a Group CPR or First Aid Class
If your group or organization has at least four people who need to be certified, we can offer a class just for them. Fill out the GVSU Recreation & Wellness service request form and select CPR or First Aid Class for a Group to get started. Class types & lengths are outlined in the course descriptions above. There is a four person minimum to conduct a session, and a 12 person max per one instructor. If a group is larger than 12, we will attempt to secure another instructor. Otherwise, multiple sessions may need to be conducted to get everyone certified.

Space Requirements
- It is the responsibility of the requesting organization to reserve space for the class. The reserved room must have an audio/video projector AND an open area for conducting first aid/CPR skill sessions.
- Classrooms in the GVSU Fieldhouse are the preferred location.
- Please reserve the room for 15-30 minutes prior to the start of the class to allow for room set-up.
- If you are interested in holding an off-campus certification, provide this on the service request form. Additional fees may apply.
Payment & Registration
- The organization is responsible for providing Recreation & Wellness with the following:
- First name, last name and email of class participants.
- Location of space reserved for the class, and reservation time.
- One payment for the entire group is required three business days before the class in the form of credit or check (made out to GVSU).
- Student organizations or GVSU departments may be able to pay with on-campus funds through a department journal entry.
