Professor Kong's primary research interests focus on comprehensive and alternative medicine (CAM) and the communicative process in illness management in cross-cultural contexts. She has also been involved in research on medical interpreting, social support and health literacy. She has published in the journals Qualitative Health Research and Studies of Translation and Interpretation. In 2010, she won the National Communication Association's top paper award for the Communication and Aging Division.
