About the Tutoring & Reading Center
The Tutoring and Reading Center (TRC) is your one-stop shop for content tutoring and reading support. Whether you make an appointment ahead of time or stop in for a Just in Time Appointment, our peer tutors can review course concepts, study strategies, reading comprehension strategies, and more.
The Tutoring and Reading Center employs over 70 academically successful peer tutors who receive over 10 hours of comprehensive training in tutoring strategies, active listening, equity and inclusion, and more. In the TRC, we strive to provide student-centered support that is inclusive and accessible to all GVSU students.

Sunday: 4 pm-8 pm
Monday: 9 am-8 pm
Tuesday: 9 am-8 pm
Wednesday: 9 am-8 pm
Thursday: 9 am-8 pm
Friday: 9 am-4 pm
Frequently Asked Questions
Nope! If you just have a few quick questions, you can leave your session early or you can also visit one of the drop-in centers if there is one available for the course.
Also, keep in mind that tutoring sessions can be used to help you review previous material, do extra practice, plan for exams, and discuss learning strategies.
Call or email the Tutoring and Reading Center ([email protected] or 616-331-3451). The center will work with our tutors to add more availability for that subject if possible.
You can either schedule individual appointments each week for the remainder of the semester with your tutor or you can reach out to the tutoring center and they can do that for you.
Navigate allows you a schedule a 50-minute, one on one appointment with a tutor. Once you have scheduled a time with a tutor you will receive an email with the URL to Blackboard collaborate or another online video platform. At your scheduled appointment time, you will access the URL and be greeted by your tutor.
A computer or laptop with audio and video is ideal, but anything that will at least provide you access to Zoom.
Sometimes tutors and students don’t “click.” Schedule your next session with a different tutor. Also, keep in mind that coming to tutoring sessions prepared with material, questions and a goal that you would like to achieve will help the tutor provide a session that is most helpful. If you have concerns about your experience, please reach out to the tutoring center and let us know. Your feedback is important and will help us improve.
