Transgender and cisgender people use pronouns and gender identity terms that best aligns with how they both see themselves and how that aligns with societal views. Appropriately using someone's pronouns are a crucial aspect of respecting a person's gender identity. Ethically collecting sexual orientation and gender identity is also another way to enhancing the supports around gender affirming care and it is one step in Grand Valley's commitment to creating an inclusive environment. Using the correct pronouns and acknowledging the diversity of gender identity and sexual orientation demonstrates that you acknowledge and support the community that we all share. Misusing pronouns this information can be hurtful, invalidating, and disrespectful.
